But how tight is 12 ftlbs? Like, a bit over hand tight im guessing?

Or, how exactly can you check the calibration of a torque wrench?

There are testing meters for all kinds of things, yes even torque

Pretty much any tool truck can check a torque wrench.

Im just wondering, im bangin my head on the wall with the 4wd on my quad....im down to last resort efforts here. The hubs have to be exactly 144 in lbs (12ft lbs) to work properly, everything else is good. Its all i got left is my wrench is way off.

Denise, thats a cool little gadget...

Get a 1 foot breaker and a 12 lb weight, or a 12 foot breaker and a 1 lb weight. Get your bolt snug, and put your bar on the bolt, hang the weight off the end of the bar. Bingo, 12 ft.lb.

^^^^ THIS.

You can check the accuracy of your torque wrench using the same method. Most wrenches arn't as accurate at the bottom and top of the range.

Right. Which is why for something as low as 12 ft lb I would use an in lb wrench.

Heck, my ft lb torque wrench doesn't even start until 15.

I was using an inch lb wrench. But its not the click kind, its got the gauge and pointer, plus, its like 30 years old and i bought it at a yard sale...why i question it....

Should work fine. Just make sure it's reading 0 when no torque is applied.

Harbor Freight (or Princess Auto, if you live in Canada) sell some pretty affordable click-type torque wrenches:

As this showed in a quick and dirty test on an 8-year old Harbor Freight torque wrench, accuracy is not too shabby (for best results, store the click-type wrenches set on "0" - something I learned today!)

Also as he noted in video, professional quality click-type torque wrenches have smoother action (including finer ratchets) and better finish, etc., but OK for once-in awhile use and for sure better than a yard-sale swinging needle type! (Not really running the older ones down, just suggesting this is one of those things that technology (and competitive pricing) have moved along on.

The non-click type torque wrench will never go out of whack, unless bent. But they can be hard to read in some situations. Click type are much quicker. I would trust a non-click before a click type.

The beam style (non-clickable) is still necessary for some operstions. Sometimes you're looking for a reading instead of tightening to a value. ie: pinion preload. Both tools will always be useful.

I do small engines, so 12ft lbs is 144 inch lbs. My pinkie can do 77 inch lbs easy. Bottom two fingers can do way more than 12 ft lbs.

We have a Snap off guy that comes by. We turn it in, in two weeks it magically appears.
