ive got an 04 edge with a cd player in it and i was wondering if its possible to wire a small amp and a sub off of the stock unit. i dont want to change the looks of the dash thats why i want to keep the stock one. not looking to go anything huge just have a little more thump when i listen to my godsmack.:headbang:

You'll need to splice into the speaker wire, which isn't hard to do really. Just remove the rear speakers, splice the wire right behind them, and replace the speaker. Then run the wires to the amp. Most amps have inputs to accept the speaker wire. If your amp doesn't have one, you can buy an adaptor (line output converter).

If your radio dosent have a 12v output wire (Ie. Remote) You will have to splice one off the smoke lighter, and wire a switch in it while your there.

If you use an amp with speaker inputs, you usually don't need the remote wire. The amp can automatically sense current in the speaker wire and turn on/off by itself.

i was also thinking of just upgrading the speakers to ones with more bass to them. i dont really want to run a power supply for the amp under the truck somewhere. i used to have a very weak but acceptible sub that plugged into my 12 volt plug in the dash of my old 95. it was a crappy 10 inch with a very cheap amp but it workded and i could take it out.

well you dont run the power wire under the truck.

also your factory HU is prolly putting out some were in 18-22wrms range. you can upgrade your speakers but you wont get much more out of them. power is the key to all this. if your just going to add a sub dont splice your rears. use a high low converter. physical it looks like your splicing the the rears but, the hi low wont take the power it just uses it as a signal. were as splicing into the amp will.

if your looking for KISS and a lil bass. i would try and find an amp thats 50wrms x4 at 4 ohms. then you can replace the rear speakers and get some more mids. then bridge the back end of the amp and power a nice 8 or 10 inch and fill in for the low.

it may sound gay, but a bazooka tube works well for this kind of thing. sub and amp in one, comes with the harness you run the speaker wires to and doesnt need big power or ground wires. it is nice and compact and actually sounds good for what it is.

hmm may go to best buy for some planning. i would really love to keep the stock head unit but would be a hell of a lot easier if i could just have an aftermarket one. i could build a self contained unit with 4 speakers and 2 subs and keep it behind the seat.
