STX Beef?

I'm beginning to delve into the front end of my '91 Ranger STX (4.0L Auto 4X4), and am finding surprises.

It started with trying to change wheel bearings and finding 6 prong lock nuts instead of the 4 prong that I expected. It makes me think I'm dealing with a few beefy options on a Dana 35, or maybe possibly a different axle (it's definitely stock).

Does anybody know of any changes that might be made for the STX? Or perhaps I have the wrong info going in and this is typical?

Auto hubs on my '91stx Ranger[4.0l 5-spd 4x4] have a different lock nut; six sided rather than 4 prongs. I had to buy a socket to change them over to manual which I took off a '91 Ranger[can't remember exactly what type, but was 2.9l 5-spd 4x4].
I'm not familiar enough with Rangers to say if it's unusual.
Now I can't remember if it was 4 or 6 prong.:icon_rofl:

Yeah if they're large hex nuts, it's because you have auto hubs on it (manual hub setups have the 4-slotted nuts).

So it looks like number C, I had the wrong info going in, and it's typical to have the bigger lock nut on auto hubs. So much for hopes of a hidden jewel.

Thanks for the input.
