Stupid Question???

ok i picked up my 1994 2wd ranger and 302 engine the guy said the engine is a fresh rebuild... heres my issue the crank pulley(harmonic balancer) spins like an 1/8 or 1/4 turn freely but the crank itself does not turn does this sound like the keyway on the crank is sheared off?

Stupid answer

Pull the balancer and check. It could be the woodruff key is damaged/missing. It could be the outer ring of the balancer is separating from the rubber.


We can guess at it all day, but you can look at it and know.

it doesnt take much at all to take the crank pulley off the engine, take it apart and check it out. if you're lucky it's just the key...

Well I pulled the balancer off I'm pretty sure the balancer is wrong with the bolt tightened all the way up the balancer is loose the keyway is there but the slot on the balancer is much larger than the key on the crank.
