I have a 2003 Ranger Edge with a 3.0L. I just did a tune up on it. Replaced the spark plugs and wires, right after I did that the truck started acting up. I would barely do 50 mph. I've ruled out crossed wires, already replaced a vacuum line, rest the lines look fine. I took it to Autozone and put a tester on it, found out it needed a cam sensor. I did replace that too. After doing all that, it will now get up past 50 mph but runs as if it's misfiring. Also it idles pretty rough, idles around 800-900 rpm. At 50 mph its turning around 2000 rpm. Is that normal? I did check the gap on the plugs which are Autolite platinums. Did I end up getting bad wires or plugs? Coil pack bad? I don't know the history of this truck, only had it a couple months. Got it from a used car dealership, and yes the warranty is up.

sounds like maybe a wire or plug to me....swap out one wire at a time till you find the misfiring cylinder

Hopefully that's it, still got the old stuff if that would help at all.

Its a quick way to check...just take the longest of your old wires and hook it up one cylinder at a time....

I will try that first thing in the morning. Thanks

Were you getting a CEL?

Tell us what you think the firing order is.

Did you do anything else other than plugs and wires?

Yes, in OD.

As Harley said, it is possible a new wire is bad or not quite connected at the plug.

From what I have found both on the web and on the coil back, starting from the front of the engine on the passenger side it goes 1,2,3 and the driver side it goes 4,6,5. Other than the plugs and wires, the cam sensor was replaced (just the sensor), replaced a vacuum hose.

This is putting up a red flag to me. it's been like this since we got it.

This end came loose, dunno if it effected anything.

Looks like the PCV hose. If that leaks it's a huge vacuum leak. The PO attempted to repair with silicone?

Could be silicone, it was done by the previous owner. I know the previous owner didn't take very good care of the mechanical part of the truck. Body wise it looks almost new.

I hooked up a scanner tool and it was tellin me there is a misfire on the number 2 and number 5 cylinder and it's not a crossed wire.

Found out the problems. Needed a new coil pack and the hose replaced that goes from the back of the intake manifold to the PVC valve. The hose had to special ordered from Ford. So get that tomorrow then when I get back from vacation put it on and all shall be right.(I hope).

glad you fixed if but it is strange. 2 and 5 are not paired cylinders. Your misfires should have been 2,6 or 1,5

Finally got the Ranger running and driving like it should. Still had a vacuum leak, had that fixed.
