Hey hows it goin, Happy New Year! 2012!!
Okay before I begin let me give out a little truck info and background. I bought my 96 Ranger back in 5/2011. I bought it with 150,000 miles. And for the price I couldnt turn it down. It needed a few things replaced (Tune up and cosmetics mostly.)
Truck Info:
1996
Ford Ranger
4x4
4.0 V6
5 Speed
Ext Cab
Short Bed
All Stock
(If any more info is needed Ill be happy to provide)
Story:
Leavin work one day I decided to mess around with a buddy of mine. Dropped the clutch at a light, Tached up, jammed it into 2nd gear, Snapped a shift fork. Shifter said it was in Neutral, but I was actually in 3rd gear. Shifter would be in 3rd and I was in 1st. Weird Combinations. I was about 20 miles from home, and with no way to pay for a tow truck at the time, I drove home, Very Carefully, Only using 3rd and N (Which was actually 1st and 3rd) Ocassionally I was able to get 5th gear. After diagnosing what the issue was, I went to my local Junk Yard, Pulled out a shifter assembely out of a 97 Ranger. (4x4, 4.0, Same as me). And Replaced it. I also ended up doing the clutch while I had the trans apart.
Issue Background:
Now about 10,000mi later, Im having a weird issue. I have ALOT of play in 4th gear as well as 5th(which isnt as bad as 4th). I can move the shifter side to side as if I was in N. I have had this issue since the new Shifter Assembely was purchased. But over the past few weeks ive developed a more severe issue. Occasionally I will put the truck in Neutral, (i.e, at a red light, stop light, driveway) and let off the clutch and the truck seems to act like its still in whatever gear I came out of. The only way to get it back into N, is to push in the clutch, tach the truck out, and put it in gear, then back into N. Its also getting harder to get into 2nd gear, and sometimes it wont go into 4 at all! Two nights in a row now I was coming home from work, and the truck was stuck in 5th, I couldnt get the shifter to move in any direction with the clutch pushed in and with the clutch completely depressed.
To sum it up:
Shifter Sticks in some gears
There is a slight grinding noise
Shifter Has alot of play
While in N the truck still remains in my previously used gear
Question:
So my question is, Is this shift fork related? Or anything else? The slave cylinder was replaced, though im not sure of the exact mileage. I was told to check my Master cylinder as well. Just wanted to get a bit of feedback.
Also i should note, the assebely purchased from Pick A Part. DID come out of a high mileage transmission (If i remember correctly the truck had about 280,000 on it). I had to do alot of cleaning on the forks before I put it in my trans.
Thanks for all the help!
