Hey fellas haven't been on here in a while and thought I'd throw you guys a question. I've been hearing a noise when moving and it seems to e coming from the rear but not to sure. Anyway it's a strange sound and hard to describe but sounds not smooth and I can hear that it's in sync withy tire rotation so I'm thinking the rear diff. Again it's hard to explain but if I had to spell the sound out it would be this "shhhhshhhhshhhshh" so yeah just let me know what you guys think thanks!

Rear brakes are the most common source of noises.

Block the front tires, jack up the back tires, put trans in neutral and spin the tires.

Differential noise or even wheel bearing noise would usually be described as a "whining"

To localize where a sound is coming from, find a parking lot with a concrete wall, drive next to the wall with drivers window down, you don't have to be that close, and listen, do the same with passenger window down on the other side, you will be surprised how clear you can hear a noise and where it is coming from.

Could be a drive shaft issue. It is hard to do this by yourself. Jack up the rear end and support it very well and put the truck in drive with the help of a buddy. Listen for the noise or....go to a shop and have them listen to the noise. Just be careful!!!

Check the lube levels in everything just because you're there. be careful around the drive shaft. Don't touch it whilst it is moving. You really dont want to get wrapped up in drive shaft. That is what happened to the Birdman, Mark Fydrich. One time local pitching rookie phenom for the Red Sox. Noted for his odd behavior on the mound, his career fizzled after a season or 2. 30 yrs later, he got wrapped up in the pto shaft of a dump body hoist. :shok:
