Well, it's been a long time since I posted here under BroncoII.9 (so long, my username was retired). But my BII is long gone and now I just bought a 1993 Ranger STX 4x4, super cab, auto trans, 4.0L.
It's a nice truck with only 83k, but I've been driving it for a week and there's this screeching sound coming from the steering column that's driving me crazy. It happens when I turn the steering wheel off center, like for parking or turning a corner (small movements like when changing lanes doesn't induce the noise). It's a screech that is almost like scraping on metal. It's really loud and happens if the truck is on or off.
It first sounded like it was coming from right behind the steering wheel, like it was a clock-spring (for the horn?), but when diagnosed by moving the steering wheel through the driver's window while outside the truck with the hood open, it then sounded like it was coming from the engine bay side of the firewall. I really can't tell now.
Does anyone know what could be making such a racket and how to fix it?
Thanks.
