Hey i was thinking about purchasing a 1998-2000+ ranger, and with the way gas prices are going im not to sure i wanna lift it. So, what is the biggest tire i can fit on it without a lift. Thanks. And is there anything to do the improves gas mileage?

Well... Getting a 2wd will help with mileage, and so will getting a 4 cylinder... If you get a 4x4, manual hubs will improve mileage, and not getting big tires will improve mileage.

Some say a tonneau cover will improve mileage as well.

If you're really concerned about fuel mileage, get a car... My old truck was a 2000 Supercab 4x4 with the 3.0. It was an automatic, and I was able to get 19-21mpg frequently going 60 to 65mph... however when I would go 75-80 on the interstate, I would get 14 mpg... On my current truck, I get 15-17 frequently going 60-65, but on the interstate going 80 it gets 21.

The best bet for best mileage is 3rd gen (93-98) 3.0, 2wd, manual trans.

These trucks have been known to get high 20s and even into the low 30s on all highway tanks.

I'd stay away from bigger tires, they won't help because all the extra rolling weight is gonna use up "advantage" of the higher drive ratio real fast.

alright thanks guys. the only reason i was wondering about the tires is because i enjoy driving on the beach alot, and as you can see by my name i go to vt. And with the mountains come alot of snow so i was looking to upgrade a bigger all terrain tires, would it fit 31s or 32 with the stock height?

Yeah I would stick with a 2wd 93 - 97 ranger, a 98+ ranger wouldn't get but 1 - 2 mpg worse mileage. I woiuld also stick with the 3.0L, it has more power than the 4 cyl and gets close to if not better gas mileage. Plus they have very good reliablility and the older models are much simpler.

I would go with an '01+ if you could find one - bunch of small changes that make a huge difference. A 4.0 4wd with a stick will get around 20's for gas mileage, and will go as far off road on 31's as you should go without recovery equipment and friends.

My '87 ranger had manual hubs, 5 speed, 2.3 liter, 3" lift, 32x11.50 mud terrains and a roll bar with 3 KC daylighters and 4.10s. I was getting 9mpg in town 12 mpg highway on a good day. Usually a quarter of tank to work and another going home, All highway.
