stock airbox or cold air intake??

From what I been reading on here it seems most people prefer just the stock airbox with stock filter, is that right? I have a homeade cold air intake on my truck that I made out of an Oatey shower drain, sounds good but can't really tell a difference in power with it. I've had it on there for a while but thinking about switching back to the stock airbox. Other motor mods are Bama chips programmer and flowmaster exhaust. Think it'll be much of a difference if I go back to stock airbox and filter?
 
I get alot of funny looks when I say shower drain, it dont look as bad as it sounds, but anyway, I'll go ahead and put my stock airbox back on. Think the stock k&n is worth the money? From what I read the engine wont pull any more air than the stock airbox and stock filter produces without TB and intake mods.

you read right. your stock intake system will easily outflow your TB and heads. the stock intake is also a true cold-air intake and most trucks have an IAC pre-heater.
 
Alright back to stock intake it is, anybody know where I can find a cheap air box, besides a junkyard as mine must have gotten thrown away when my shed was cleaned out.
 
Nothing wrongs with a junkyard thats my favorite place to go roundin up parts, but I would like to have it waiting on me to put on when I get back instead of having to search around junkyards. I'm the military in Afghanistan for about 15 more days then I'm going home, been here since Sep. Lookin forward to getting back. I was just seeing if anybody on here had one they might part with, I wouldnt go to a dealer or anything and pay their prices.
 
Yes, go back to the stock airbox, and use the OEM paper airfilters.
 
Use a stock air box and a K&N Filter. I have that exact setup in my 2000 3.0 and it works really good. Not too much of a difference, but a friend told me they felt a slight pick up in my takeoffs from a light. I put a dynamax cat-back system on and it breaths alot easier. An intake kit on the 3.0 ranger only puts out 4 hp at roughly 4800 rpm (i know cause i work at Advance Auto Parts and have the K&N Listing book) Plus the stock look gives you a little sleeper look in my opinion
 
I'm gonna just go back to the stock airbox and run a paper filter, from what I been reading on here about a k&n, it's probably been gumming up my MAF sensor all along.
 
K&N's work just fine as long as you dont get carried away with the oil. ive had mine on for something like 25,000 miles and my MAFS is still as clean and dry as the day i pitched my last paper filter.

Most people just use WAY too much oil. Be judicious with it and let it sit for enough time to let it dry completely.
