for the past few days i've been working on an 87 ranger with a 2.9l. after a few tests i determined it was the starter solenoid.

the starter solenoid keeps sticking with the control wire removed from it. it will let go when tapped with a hammer.

it has a good battery, new starter that doesn't draw too much, new battery cables (they were bad).

we have been through 5 NAPA solenoids and they all stick. yesterday i pulled the original rust covered MOTORCRAFT solenoid off a 1973 motorhome and tried that, haven't had one problem.

i just wanted to warn everyone of the cheap chinese shit that is sold from napa

Napa's selonoid's are not chinese. Borg Warner makes them, in the US. Unless of course you are buying the cheapest value line at a non-corporate Napa in which case you get what you pay for.

yeah. Napa sells some of the best after market parts.

I have a OEM starter off my 87. I'll sell you the whole thing for $50.

it says right on top "made in china"

its not up to me what we use for parts. i just install

my boss won picture of an american flag at some kind of dinner raffle. You flip the picture over and your read " made in china ". most stuff made in china is a piece of ****.

Well tell your boss to have some integrity. You can't blame Napa for selling options to your cheap ass ripoff boss.

Yup, it's their right to have a "bargain" brand and a house brand and a premium brand. Its his responsibility to not choose the bargain brand.

I usually get 2 estimates when I am trying to sell tires. I get one for a good brand like Good-year or BFG and I get one for a similar tire in Hankook or some cheap brand (but hankooks are actually not that bad).

Some people choose the cheap tires, some choose the good ones. When people who choose the cheap stuff come back I balance the tires, tell them it's the nature of the brand, and send them down the road.

Echlin, not Borg-Warner. B-W is pepboys and carquest i think. But you're right, only the cheap brand is China crap

A friend of mine was proud of himself for giving me a cap...
I looked at the label, company name was USA cap,
MADE IN CHINA !!!!!!!
I promptly gave it back to him and had a huge laugh,
but in retrospect, it's just plain SAD....

Just got a "Echlin" solinoid for a tractor starter from Napa... it was made in China.

It plainly said both "Echlin" and "made in China" on the box.

So far it is working better than the one from Deere.

Echlin doesn't have factories. BW makes them branded elchlin. Same thing for Autozone stuff.

Dunno where they rank now, but once apoun a time Echlin was the best of the best for electrical parts. That is why we went with them after everbody elses crap failed to last more than a couple starts.

As recently as 2000 the stats we got in Counterman magazine agreed.

BW makes just about everything.

The thing about branded parts production is that the other brands a company makes can be better than it's own brand.

Branded parts are made by one company from specs provided by the brand holder.
