Sticking Brakes

My rear brakes were sticking when I let out the parking brake, when I backed up just a little they would break free. I changed shoes and springs and it is still happining. Brakes have been adjusted. Any other ideas????:icon_twisted:

If I were a betting man I'd look at the adjusters. Shoe adjusters are probably the last parts replaced on any vehicle. Given example: I sell probably hundreds of brake shoe parts a year and out of all those maybe 5 adjuster kits.

If you go with adjusters get the kits with all the parts. It could be a brake release cable but I'd say adjusters.

is the weather freszing where you are? If so, the shoes are freezing to the drums, if the transmission is manual, leave it in first gear instead... if it's an auto, why are you using your parking brake?

Um, I think the better question is why the frack aren't you using yours.

Neither a manual transmission using engine compression nor a parking pawl in an automatic trans are meant for the purpose of holding a vehicle still while parked.

The proper procedure for parking an auto, as given by Ford's engineering department, is to stop, fully set the brake, THEN put it in park. It is possible for the transmission to get stuck in park with the vehicle's weight resting against the pawl, or for the pawl itself to break. That is an emergency backup device not intended to hold the vehicle by itself.

And I have seen manual transmission vehicles start to roll off in gear.

In fact Pennsylvania's motor vehicle safety code is worded so that highway operation a vehicle that has a parking brake that either doesn't hold OR doesn't release fully is not allowed.

I too am having a issue with my parking brake, I can't use it, it won't fully release, I've replaced everything, springs,Self adjusters, drums, they g=did it again yesterday had to go into reverse to get them to release, it took an hour. now my drums feel out of round.
What is causing this issue? the cables?

I put new cables on the truck and everyone said my adjuster was fine.

You replaced both cables that go to the rear wheels?

Did you replace the cable that goes from the cab to the "cable divider" (or did you force oil thru the cab-cable-housing using air pressure?)

ANNNNNNNNNNNND.....what ads_ said! I NEVER used my parking brake until I came home one day and found my truck sitting nice & purdy down in the empty field across the street from my house!

Do the rear shoes have different sizes ? Usually there are 2 different shoes, same shoe, different pad sizes. One is a leading shoe and the other is a follower. If these are mis-matched, you may have all sorts of gremlins. If I remember keereckly, The shoe with the least pad area is the leader. I just remove both drums and work on one side at a time, so I always have a guide. I got new hardware for less than 10$. Parts were fairly cheap on the whole. It maybe something is loose under a drum

I gonna work on it today, I'll chek the shoes and make sure they're right and have to get a hardware kit too. Thanx

There is a leading and trailing shoe, but it has been my experience that if they are put on backwards and the parking brake is set, the lower springs and the adjusters come out. You know about it quickly too because the pedal gets soft and the brakes make a horrid noise.

also....if the drums have been "turned"....and a "shoulder" was left, the metal edge of the shoe can get caught on the metal shoulder causing the shoe to grab.............

long shot......but is happens..............

I replaced the drums with new ones 2 months ago, and the shoes with them, used the old hardware which was a year old.
I had the same issue 2 months ago the e brake wouldn't fully disengage.
I pulled the drums, they look a little scored, but not worn down at all.
the shoes had a U shape pattern in the leading shoe on both sides, the shoes are barely worn they aren't gouged.
I installed new hardware, sanded the shoes with 400 grit and reinstalled them.
it worked great, tested it around the block going forward and stopping, then go backwards and stopping, stopping distance was good.
I went to the store later and when I came out they were binding again, I could feel it and the truck wasn't rolling I had to give it power to roll, What is going on?
