Stereo installed, having issues

I just installed a JVC stereo from another car, where it worked fine, to my Ranger. Printed off the schematic from here so I had all the color codes and such(why couldn't Ford stick to a more universal color code on their audio, lol) then wired up my pig-tail. Stereo only has the one ground wire which was originally set up with an eyelet to secure to a metal part of the dash, but given the harness had a ground wire I connected there instead.(was that the correct thing to do?)
With the ignition off, when I plugged in the antenna there was a pop from the right front speaker and otherwise no sound. Upon playing a little with the antenna cable I got static then stations, but nothing out of the right front speaker. Other speakers sound fine.
Played with it for a while. Set the clock and my pre-sets, then checked for power to the RF speaker. Had dim light at probe on both wires so I am assuming the speaker is just bad. Oh, while driving around if I had the fade to the front I could hear some crackling and popping in the right too.
The only other thing that is goofy is, the stereo comes on consistently, but intermittently the sound goes off, like it is muted only there is no mute button. Would a weak ground cause this and should I make a ground strap frm the stereo body to the dash frame? Any help on this would be appreciated.

1. a weak ground can cause lots of issues
2. why would you have power to a speaker?

sounds to me like you need speakers or the JVC headunit is bad.. maybe bad wires. maybe its wired wrong. i think you have power going to the speaker and you shouldn't. i don't see why the test light would light up at a speaker...?

why didn't you get the ford adapter to wire to the headunit so you can just plug it in to the factory wiring???!??????!!???????

Run another ground to be sure it's properly grounded. It is normal to have voltage in speaker wires, a/c voltage that is. If I had to guess off your description, I would say you possibly have a speaker wire touching ground somewhere.

This makes sense, that pop was the driver in the speaker fielding, forcing the cone out, and it will stay out until the key is off I assume (unless it doesn't stop then the key is off, then it has a constant 12v wire hooked to it). You somehow put battery voltage to the speaker. The light was dim because the power was being used by the coil the speaker, so you only got a dim light from what wasn't being drawn from it. Recheck your wiring and disconnect that speaker, if it is in fact getting direct voltage it can get very hot and possibly smoke or melt, did it start to smell like burning plastic? This just what I assume happened from what you said.

When you plugged in the antenna, you gave the radio another ground, it seems like your speaker has a power source, and your antenna gave it a place to go, since the speakers ground through the head unit.

Start again! Good luck with it, I'm doing a complete overhaul to my current system, when I get some time I really have to do some write-ups, hopefully next week I can get started on them. PM me if you have any questions, my phone alerts me when I get a pm, I would most likely respond pretty quickly, unless im once again wrist deep in ranger.

I will probably pull the door panel off tomorrow to check the RF speaker and see what is up with that. Also will wire in a ground strap to see how that does. Will post up the results. Thanks.

Well, I got it figured out. The speaker was shorted out and blew when I plugged the stereo in and was causing a sort of electrical feedback to the head unit. I went ahead and installed an external ground strap since I had the wire and connectors. Went to the local self serve junk yard and found a good factory speaker out of a 95 Explorer for $6 and all is good. Thanks for the input guys. Now on to the next item, the AC.

you mean people actually reinstall factory speakers?? lol. just messing w/ ya bro.

Hey what can I say, I hardly ever turn the volume past 20 out of 50, I'm 52 and, shall we say, quite frugal, lol.
Besides, I'm still undecided on this thing. I like the truck, but I really wanted an extended cab 5-speed so I don't want to put too much $$ into this thing if I am not going to keep it. Know what I mean???

BTW, 4.0B2, I just looked at your B2 and that is one nice looking Bronco II.

Where is Walls from Greenville? I was born in Greenville, MS.
