I have an 84 302 thats going into my ranger and I'm needing to put a starter in it. I know I can use either the version with the solenoid on the starter or the older style with the solenoid on the fender well. the question is do they interchange, what will fit and what wont? are there any clearance issues with the frame rails for either one?

What transmission are you using? I believe the mustangII starters work good if you are tight on space. But most starters do fit. As long as it fits around what you are using go with it. If it has the solenoid on the starter no problem. You could either rewire to match the starter or get a longer positive for the newer style starter and just direct the old solenoid output to the new one.

I'm using an AOD. I just wanted to make sure that the bolt patterns were the same and get the maximum clearance possible.

What year starters dont have the solenoid on them?
