I have a 2.9 in my truck and i have put 3 junk yard starters in it since i did my swap from auto to 5 speed i don't know why they keep going out but i was wanting to know if i could get a 4.0 starter to bolt on my truck or not and if so is there any advantages to putting one on it like stronger then the 2.9 starter :icon_confused:

A 4.0 auto trans starter will work.

I'll bet you answered your own question about why they keep dying though.

As for upgrading, any time you don't work something mechanical to it's full capacity every time you use it, it will last longer.

The 4.0 starter is a bit stronger. I'm not sure how much more durable they are though. I burned one up in 2 years. My factory one lasted 20 something.

The 4.0 permanant magnet starter draws half the current produces 60% more turning torque
ad even if it isn't more durable it's half the weight and it's one HELL of a lot easier to change.

That's a bit subjective.

I have found that if you use the 2.9's starter bolts you need some very specific tools to do it. Like a 17mm stubby wrench.
