Anyone ever done this? I was working on my truck and it decided to crap out on me. SO FRUSTRATED! Was going great. I turned on and she barely turned over and that was that. Tested the starter relay and it clicks but the motor will not turn over.

Victory Lap makes a rebuild kit for $30 as opposed to buying a new starter for $150. Looks like a pretty straight forward job.

1991 2.3L 2wd....and I just got the thing running again!!!!!!

AGGGRH!!!!!

No experience with rebuilding a starter.

But buying a new starter will usually leave you with a lifetime warranty. Better than rebuilding this starter and risking it not working or pooping out a while down the road. A special tool or two may be needed.....

Yet, by all means I know what it's like to be strapped for cash and anything you can do to save a dollar is important. Go ahead and give it a try. Follow instructions, and all should be fine.

Odds are, it's just worn out brushes anyway.

Take it apart before you buy the kit. If all you find is short brushes, go for it.

Earl,

Took it apart and one set of the bushes is worn. They sit on springs and they are all the way extended out and sheared off. If I replace them with that kit it should work again?

Also do I need to clean the thing out? Seems to me I should just fix what's wrong in there and leave the rest of it alone. If you have an words of advice, I'm all ears!!!

I need this thing to work and as cheap as possible.

I got one from a u-pull yard and it worked fine for about three years...just after I bought a rebuilt one the truck died and I haven't driven it since...but the rebuilt one is still cranking great...

I have found that in most cases the solenoid (Bendix???) goes on the starter and if you're not replacing that then doing the brushes may or may not be a lasting fix...if it's the original I'd say either try a yard if available or get a rebuilt...sounds like you're truck is giving you a 'run for your money'...

That's what mine is doing now...but it's worth it...

You have no idea...well maybe you do. I might have to take a trip out to the yard. This is so frustrating. I only got to drive if for one day!

Found one at the you pull it yard and installed it. Works great and a lot less hassle then I thought it would be. Also found a electrical connector to fix my RABS light that would not go out. All for $20. I'm a happy camper.

Thanks for the help.
