starter issues

The parts truck I bought had a grindy starter. Swapped motor and tranny into my truck and switched starter, same grinding sound. Now there is no plate behind this starter. Is there supposed to be some type of spacer or plate behind it? Anyone have a pic?
I did separate the motor and tranny and did notice that the metal plate between the motor and tranny did not have anything that went around the starter. Is that correct??

Any help would be great really don't want to get a new starter until I can get it to hit straight. Also did look at the flywheel and it seemed good.:icon_confused:

Tried puting 1 washer with both bolts between the starter and tranny and same grinding.

how did the gears on the starter look? like they were not engaging correctly? no clue how old this set up is, but it could be just a bad or old starter.
mine was very loud as it cranked so i got a new one. again, ring gear was fine, bolted up fine. still has the loud sound as it cranks, although not quite as bad. i've read that the old ones were known to be noisy and the only thing to be done was maybe get a ring gear with a different number of teeth on it. didn't want to go that far, so i just put up with it. starts fast enough, so it's ok with me.

you have the wrong starter, mine did this. I had gotten an auto starter from pull a part for my 5spd 4.0 turns out the pintle shaft is 3/4 inch too long and the teeth never fully engage. The other option is the both starter you have the pintle shaft is goin bad, this was my other problem with the initial starter.

Are you dealing with a 4.0 truck with a manual trans?

If so it takes 4-5 washers (and bolts that are ~10mm longer) to
compensate for the "too long nose" of an auto trans starter

the aluminum "nose" of the starter is physically different on the 4.0 with the manual transmission

When I shimmed it back with 1 washer it still ground pretty good but did seem like it quieted down a tick. Next tried 2 and the starter would not even engage.
The first starter actually did seem like it was going way too far and hitting the other end of the tranny! This one doesn't seem to be but it does grind and even try to jump out. There is metal pieces from the grinding but it's difficult to see where the heck it's coming from.
Do you guys recommend taking this one apart and puting in better stuff or ordering a new one? Dang things are 100 bucks but I guess what isn't anymore.
Also am I supposed to put locktight on these bolts to keep them from coming loose?

Sorry went to upper Iowa university to catch for my daughter in a pitching clinic so couldn't answer right away.

Thanks

Jeff

This truck is a 92 ranger with a 2.9 and stick. The 2.9 and stick came out of a different 92 ranger and the bottom bolt has a nut so I'm assuming it was worked on quite frequently.

Could I possibly have the wrong starter for my 84 B2? I have a manual tranny, and have problems with my starter grinding. Get it installed and its ok for a while then it goes to grinding again. Seems like the auto parts store only shows one starter. What can I do to fix this grinding issue that happens after a while. I did finally break down and have a hole drilled in the bottom of the tranny to install a through bolt with a lock nut as the threads were stripped out in the hole. Top bolt still cranks down nice and tight. Anything I should check besides having an incorrect starter?
