hey guys i need some help my truck is a 90 rang 2.9 im having a problem with my starter when i start my truck my starter stays engaged i replaced the solenoid 5 times replaced the starter all the cables but for some reason it still trips the solenoid oh i also replaced the ignition switch and the key tumbler and it still dose it so if anyone has any imput to what would cause this please let me know thanks

If I remember right there is a relay on the starter itself, that may be bad. Also did you replace the relay on the inside of the fender or the one on the starter?

There should be two different starters, one for manual trans and one for automatic.

Also if you have a fender mounted solenoid make sure the new starter doesn't also have a solenoid.

The fender mounted solenoid wiring needs to be correct.
Battery "+" on one large post, alternator wire on same post(not starter motor post).
Starter motor wire on the other large post, and maybe a smaller wire with diode that goes to the "+" on the Coil.

Then a small wire to the smaller "S" post on the solenoid, this wire will have 12volts ONLY when key is in the Start position, 0volts when in Run or Off position.
This is what activates(closes) the solenoid connecting the battery and the starter motor for cranking.

If you have an "I" post as well(4 post solenoid), that is connected to the Coil's "+" side, but coil wire can be connected to the "I" post or to the starter motor post, same result, but diode is not needed if "I" post is used
This sends the full 12volts to coil when engine is starting/cranking to get a "hotter" spark, coil only gets 8 volts while engine is running, this prevents coil from overheating.

hey guys thanks for the info but everything u guys said i have already done all wires r right the starter is correct i do have the fender solenoid that is correct but for some reason it just keeps going bad like i said i even replaced the ignition switch and key tumbler thinking that would help i got a month out of that fix and it started doing it again is there any one else out in ranger land that had this problem with the starter staying engaged with the key off . any help is app thanks

Well it is a pretty simple circuit

battery-----solenoid-----starter
12v----------/...(activate)

If that 12v wire is shorting against another full time 12v wire then solenoid wouldn't open(stop cranking) when you let off the key.
You can remove that 12v wire and run a test wire to the battery and try starting it that way a few times, if it doesn't stick then run a new 12v wire to the ignition switch under the steering column.

Does it only stick when cranking or will starter engage while driving?

Hey ron that's good info that's what I'm looking for I am going to check that out 2moro but yea it only does it when starting but again very good info thank u very much
