Hi
86 RANGER 2.9LT Super Cab manual transmission 4X4

Starter craped out on above old wreck, it was sitting for 4 years.
I havent took the started off yet, gonna start on taking it off now.
First thing I will do is make sure no starter mounting bolts are loose.

The motor part of the starter seems to be just fine.

Starter was good for a while, then once in a while the bendix would not engage and starter motor would just spin. Now starter cranks maybe 3 revs and locks up tite it cant turn, try it again its locked up cant turn. Wait a while try again, same story again, starter cranks maybe 3 revs and locks up tite it cant turn, try it again its locked up cant turn.

What should I do?? Try and fix bendix?? What do I do to fix bendix clean and lubricate it??
:icon_confused:

Oh and, is it the same starter as found on 75 Ford F150 360 V8 ??

thanks

Probably not the same starter. I would take the starter out , after checking for a loose / dirty connection . How is the battery? What happens if you jump the solenoid? If it still no good take it apart and clean and lube it, then put it back together, If there are contacts that are dirty, shine them up. good luck :D

Hi
Ya not the same, Ranger 2 bolts F150 3 bolts. Maybe its the same cept for the snout, I dunno.
Everything fine as far as what Andy sez ^^above^^.

I took starter down and jumped it with booster cables, nothing wrong with starer.
Whats wrong is one 1/2 way chewed down tooth on starter gear and starting to chew on next tooth. Look thru starter hole and see damage to ring gear, teeth chewed in from the edge a little. So thats why starter stuck, bind up of starter gear and ring gear.
Now see, this Ranger is for yanking fire wood outta the bush so Ill be stopping and starting 10 times a day, so I think I should put new ring gear. Big job so leave it for now and get wood with 85 Ranger 2WD.

Can I put ring gear by yanking the tranny and bell housing and stuff out or do I havta yank the motor out??

With what you are describing I would bet that the armature bearings in the starter are worn and allowing the armature and bendix to get cocked and bound once loaded up by the engine.

The way I see it you have three good options:

1) Get a used starter from the junk yard or someone on here.

2) Get a new (don't buy reman, they just aren't as good) starter.

3) Get a starter from something with a 4.0 auto.

The 4.0 starter bolts to the 2.9 trans and is much stronger and more reliable. You just have to add one large battery cable and be sure to get one from a AUTO trans. The 4.0 flywheel for the manual trans is larger and so the starter nose is smaller. The 4.0 flex plate for the auto trans is the same size as the 2.9.

#3 would be my first choice.

Well that changes everything.

I do not believe that the ring gear can be replaced separate from the flywheel on the 2.9.

Since it looks like you need a starter and a flywheel already check this out:

If this truck is used to loading up and hauling stuff around you will probably be much happier with that setup. I know I was.

adsm08, so like are you saying even tho flywheel has some gear damage i can get away with just putting a new starter??
