My Ranger stalls if I start up and try to go right away. I have to rev the engine a bit (and sometimes that makes it stall) and even then sometimes it jerks back and forth as I try to pull away. After that, it runs fine.

What could cause this and how do I fix it?

Thanks!

Have you give it a tuneup lately how old are the wires. If you dont know how old the wires or PCV are change them with your tune up. Start with preventative maint tune up, oil change and filters. Then get back with us if it works or not and take it from there.

Replaced PCV last week. Plugs & wires are about 5 yrs (maybe 30k miles) old. I bought new plugs & wires to install some time this week. :)

It`s time to prep for winter check the gap on your plugs when you pull them you will see why they need to be changed more often and the wires are probably just about due. I change the cap and rotor yearly and plugs every other year and the gap on the plugs is usually close to .55 on the gap after two years. I have got in the habit of changing the PCV with plugs for s%^*s and giggles they are cheap. I prefer autolite single platinum never had one foul yet but motorcraft plugs are the best if you can get them.

yeah, I bought the motorcraft platinum plugs from advance. I picked up cap, rotor, plugs (I think those were autolite), and air filter while I was there...have just been too busy this week to install

If that doesn't fix it, I'd look at fuel pressure first.

My personal theory on this as mine has always done this it's a matter of how much.It used to be bad now you just about have to make it do it on purpose. As adsm08 says it has to do with fuel pressure the transfer stage between the pump on when you crank and the motor starts to get it going.I believe if the fuel pressure leaks down while it's parked it needs to idle longer before you can drive away. The number one thing that does this is the little piece of hose between the pump in the tank and the metal pick up tube.If you take out an original there are no clamps and the hose its very soft in your hand leaves your fingers black. When you pull it off the tubing there's very little resistance.Changing this hose helped mine anyway it's just a theory.
