My friend just bought a Ranger from where he works. The truck is a '98 4.0L automatic, 2wd, supercab. The problem occurs when you stop the truck. The truck will come to a stop and as it slows down it'll act like a manual slowing down without pushing the clutch in. It'll hesitate, jump, and buck under 5-10 mph and stall as soon as it stops. If you put it into neutral it works fine. Sometimes it will also stall when you shift it into drive to drive off, after putting it in N to stop, unless you gun the engine.

Vacuum leak, throttle position sensor, coolant temp sensor.

I agree with Klogtruck- if the converter isn't unlocking it will do the scenario you describe. When you start out from a stop it should shift 4 times, 1-2 is a little sloppy, 2-3 is kinda quick, 3-4 is real slow (converter locking up) and 4-5 is a normal shift. Pay attention to how it upshifts, if the converter is locked up it will miss the 3-4 shift (skip over it) as it is already locked in.

Betcha the torque converter lockup switch is bad.

if it the lockup switch, fix it ASAP, distroyed a converter in my donor truck(keep leaking)
