squeeling noise from a 2.3

my girl friend has a 2.3 1997 ranger and it makes a squeeling noise when driving. i didint think it was the belt because it would stop when the truck was moving and squeel when slowing down or at a stop light. could it be the belt tensioner or belt its self? i thought it was the brakes until i drove it i must be something under the hood because the pads have pleanty of life left and it goes away while applying the brakes. anybody else have this problem?
 
it goes away when you apply the brakes? if so, it's deffenitely the brakes. maybe just a rock or something lodged inbetween the dust cover and the rotor.
 
My chevy does the same exact thing! I know it's not the belt, 'cause I just changed it and have verified that it has the proper tension. It almost sounds like a bearing on its' way out. It changes pitch and disappears when accelerating and returns at every stop. The noise starts after the motor has warmed up.

The main reason, I think, is that it's a chevy. I'm seriously thinking about changing to 5w30 in hopes of the noise subsiding long enough to trade the piece of shit in on a decent vehicle.
 
Most common points of squeal:

Belt.

Timing belt idler pulley on 2.3 engines.

Serpentine belt idler pulley(s).

Alternator bearing.

A/c pulley bearing.

On manual trans, throwout bearing.

shade, he said it goes away when he applies the brakes.

to see if it's the throw-out bearing, apply slight pressure to the clutch pedal, the noise will change or go away. usually it's not loud enough that you'd hear it while driving though, and sounds more like a jingle than a squeel.

would the through out bearing even squeel when moving and while stopped?

No, the throwout bearing would squeal when the clutch is depressed only. It should dissapear when you let the clutch out.

With it being on decelleration, I would be led to believe that it is either the serpentine tensioner is worn, letting the belt squeal, or the idler pulley bearing is on it's way out, but it should squeal on acceleration if it were that.

I would start the truck up, and see if you can replicate the noise in the driveway with the hood up, then have someone else control the throttle, while you search around under the hood. It may help to have a long screw driver, and put the tip of the screwdriver against the main components suspected, with the handle against your ear. This will help amplify the squeal, and hopefully tell you where it's coming from. Keep in mind you will hear a slight growl, this is normal. You'll be listening for a higher pitched sound.
