going to lower my ranger and was having a hard time finding info on which one giver better handling/ ride quality. will be looking for sway bars too if that changes anything

also would it make sense to do both with different springs to keep it around 3" lower
 
How low do you want to go? Spring under with an Explorer axle will give you around 4" of drop.
 
Spring under gives less axle wrap. Distance from axle spring pad to tire ground patch is less so less torque applied to springs.

Anti-roll bars stop roll, so less traction transferred to outside tire in a turn. In the ranger adding a rear anti-roll bar is usually a good thing because the stock ranger setup front pushes through a turn.
 
was thinking about 3 in the back. but not sure exactly. also just got another ranger that is 4x4 so might change plans for now,
