Spindle nut tourqe number?

My dad and I are replacing the front wheel bearings on my truck today, and we were curious if there is a certain amount of tourqe the spindle nut is supposed to have? Or is it just tighten 'er up n' call it good. -Thanks
 
Tighten it up fairly tight, spin the wheel a few time, make sure it's still tight then back it off 1/4 turn.
 
the first nut is supposed to be tightened to 20 IN/lbs while turning the rotor the opposite way. Then back off 1/4 turn. Then re torque to 16IN/lbs. Then the washer goes on and the other spindle nut. That one gets torqued to 150 FT/lbs.

FYI, 16-20 IN lbs is a little more than hand tight.

That torque sequence is from the ford service manuals for a 97 ranger w/ a D35.
 
alright you two, dont make me turn this car around.

for the auto hub lock nut, follow the same procedure as the inner lock nut that 97ranger4x4 posted, but after the bearing is seated and nut torqued, loosen the nut to the nearest keyway and install the key.

well its been 5 years since i replaced my autos with manuals. I will have to go back and look in the manual just to get a picture of what you said. For curiosity of course! :icon_cheers:
 
i was going off the top of my head...the book probably wont agree 100% with me.

its spindle nuts, not rocket science (ask MAKG :icon_thumby:). to tell you the truth, ive never used a torque wrench on them.
 
Everyone's guessing.

The book says 30-35 ft-lbs -- yes, FOOT-lbs -- while rotating the rotor, then back off 1/4 turn and tighten to 16 INCH-lbs. Then back off to the nearest keyway.
 
ive been done for a few hours but ill take this info and write it down for future reference.....ill get the book eventually..... what we did is we tightened up till we couldnt turn the rotor, which didnt take much at all, and then backed it off till the rotor was turnable and we could get the key in. thanks for all the info though:icon_thumby:
