Spindle from knuckle trouble

Im having a rough time trying to get my spindle off of my knuckle. I've tried beating on it with a plastic hammer, a rawhide hammer, and a big hard rubber hammer. With no luck. I've even tried putting heat to it with the torches. Then beating on it... Still nothing. Soaked it in Pb blaster. Still nothing? Anyone got any suggestions? I need to replace my outer u joint on the drivers side. And can't get it off.

Truck is a 85 ranger with d28. Manual hubs.
 
Be careful with that bearing surface.

I've always had luck with using a shorter wood 2x4, using a BFHammer to jar them loose. The soft wood doesn't hurt the spindle and you get the force you need.
 
when I did mine I used a big chizel (sp?) as a wedge to push it apart.
 
If you can find a long bar of the same diameter as the inside, you can insert it (not too far, there are needle bearings in there) and pry down/up on it.
 
Well my axle is still in there. I'm trying to get it off so that i can get to my axle to change the u-joint.

Just take your time, it's a tight fit to begin with, and rust makes it tighter.
Once you get it off, you'll see that the spindle fits into the knuckle. It is not just a flush fit.
That's why hitting it with a large hammer and block of wood is more work than the sharp chisel approach.
Look REAL close for the separation line to put the sharp chisel or sharp screwdriver in the right place.
I always keep a screwdriver with no handle in my tool box for this kind of work.
Work your way around once it starts to come apart, rather than hitting the same place.

Thanks dennis, i updated it. There is part of a broken/rusted shield there, is that were the separation point would be?
 
nobody suggested using the special tool and a slide hammer.

the tool threads onto the spindle then you attach a slide hammer to the tool then remove the spindle.

both can be rented at most auto parts stores
 
That's true, but i got mine apart with a chizle in like 5 minutes, so it'd be a waste of time to drive to the store to get something I don't need. Although the RIGHT tool probably would make things easier. :)
