speedo is only a gauge top speed may vary.

Yep, just a gauge. In high school I drove my parents 86 Olds Cutlass Cera with a 4 banger and 85 mph speedo past 100 mph.. I was keeping up with a friend in his 69 Olds F85. He said he was doing a little over 100. The speedometer needle was almost buried in my car

BTW this was when i was young and dumb and i was extremely lucky i didnt get pulled over..I don't recommend driving that fast as it is too dangerous especially in a near 30 year old truck and it severely limits your reaction time if something happens.

Yeah I wouldn't trust it anyway a 30 year old fluxcapacitor isnt too dependable

Just switch to a gauge that shows Kilometers and you will go much faster...that's what I love about Canada...I can go 120 and still not get a ticket on some highways...

As for riding a 30 year old too hard...some of them can take it better than others...my old girl has really stood up to my demands well...a good dinner does wonders for their capacity...:)

All that speed wouldn't help if you had to stop on a dime-

If it's an automatic and the 2.9 is tired... you'll probably never see the sunny side of 85 short of driving it off a cliff.

If it's a manual or the 2.9 is happy, you might get there downhill with a tailwind.

Either way, I don't recommend trying. Speaking from experience. But yes, the truck is in theory capable of over 85.

IIRC 85 mph speedos were part of a government "safety" campaign. I think you will find most cars of that vintage had 85 mph speedometers. Reasoning being, if a car said 150 mph, somebody would try it. However with an 85 mph speedo, people would be less likely to try 150!
