speedometer reading way off

i just recently got my 93 4cylinder ranger put together an on the road. it doesnt have the factory rearend not sure what its out of it was put in the truck before i got it. i tried searching the numbers on the tag,but found two ratios for the tag so its either a 3.72 or a 4.10.. i like it being geared lower it drives awesome. my problem is when im goin 50mph its reading 70mph.. and when i get on the interstate i cant run faster than 71 mph with out the truck shutting itself off because the speedo is reading its almost touching the bottom of the cluster... is there any way to calibrate my speedo to make it read right so i can actually pass on the interstate? need help please...

Yes, 1994 and earlier Rangers still used regular speedometer gear setup in the trans or transfer case

Check Wheel and tires size, should be on your door sticker. many people go with smaller because they are cheaper. that and the lower ratio rear. could be causing it

If you want to KNOW what you have, raise the rear off the ground, SAFELY.

Crawl under, mark the driveshaft, and both tires with chalk or a chunk of drywall, and turn the driveshaft, counting the number of turns before the wheels have turned 1 revolution.
You likely will find you turn over 4 turns before the wheels do one complete turn, indicating about a 4.11 ratio.
You will get great acceleration, poor fuel mileage, and lowered top speed from a more 'normal' 3.xx ratio. OTOH, you can more readily pull your boat.
