well winters coming soon and i never did figure this out. every year in winter, early mornings (when its coldest) my speedo will read wrong. when its really cold, ill be going 45 and it will read 65+mph depending on how cold it is.

its not a big deal, but i was just curious as to what it may be. it reads just fine all the other times.:icon_confused:

I have the same thing going on with mine occasionally when cold... Sometimes my tach doesn't work at all until I am 10 minutes into my drive. I am planning on pulling the cables and lubing everything to see if it changes.

haha as entertaining as this is, thats for the tailgate.

now lets get back on the real topic. not the dirty meaning.

does your truck have an outside thermometer? the reason i ask is the vehicle speed sensor creates an a/c current which varies with speed that is interpreted by the ecm via a solid-state circuit internally to the ecm, then a signal is sent from the ecm to the speedo. but the outside temp sensor would read erratically at different speeds (i.e. wind-chill) so the outside temp indicator is also on that same circuit as the speedo because it also uses the v.s.s.

if you have a small failure of a solder-connection inside the ecm it might do this

or if there is a problem with the outside temp sensor circuit (or its grounds) it might also do this

*edit, i just read the years listed on your signature......i think those are all too old to experience what i am describing

I can see where you're coming from, but I doubt that's the problem. Given the age of the truck(I'm assuming it's the one in your avatar) it would have a mechanicaly controlled speedometer.

I wouldn't have a clue as to what's causing that problem...but I'd have to say, pull it apart and lube the crap out of it! <-----figure of speech given the TRUCK PROBLEM......NOT talking about speedo the garment or crap skidmarks...and yes i'm talking about automotive lube. :icon_bounceblue:

my truck is a 1st gen, so between the plastic gears and the cable, everything shrinks when it is really cold and i have the same problem. gets better as the truck drives and warms up so i just live with it. it will be fine when the spring thaw comes in late march, early april.

yeah i mean, it doesnt really make a difference to me. its not a big deal. and i did lube it up some when i had everything apart last spring when i replaced the clutch, but no help. i still know my speed from the gear im in and its tach reading...

it just had me curious, thats all.

My F-150 had an issue when I got it and I never bothered to make any effort to fix it. No matter what the temperature, it usually reads pretty much right on and steady up to about 45 mph. After that, you just kinda guess your speed depending on how wildly the needle swings - it'll sometimes jump +/- 5mph or more. My GPS has a speedometer reading on it and most of the places I go with that truck are 50 mph or less. I know I can't go too crazy on the speed without heading downhill with a tailwind (behold the mighty 300-6, lol).
