so I was driving to work yesterday doing 65 on the freeway and all of a sudden my tach starts working again but the speedo jumps to 85 then bounces a bit nd finally stays pegged. stopped at a light in town -0- then bounces around, ( 91 Explorer 4.0 auto). are these electronic speedos or standard all cable drive? Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated,

Rob

lol...the title to this post sounds so wrong!

My '93 Ranger had the cable speedo, but if it's bouncing all over the place like that, I'd guess that it's electronic. Don't think the cable would allow things to go that haywire. If it was a cable on the fritz, the needle would just drop to 0 and stay there 'till you replace it like mine did.

Yeah, 99 is right, but that is a cable driven speedo. New cable might fix it, probably more likely that you need a new cluster, but the cables are cheaper. I'd try that first in my own truck just because of cost.

Thanks for the help guys, so today it functioned normal. I didnt figure it was electronic, and I know that the speedometer is basically a magnet and spring type of thing. So Ill pull it apart and see what needs lubed up.
