I have a 97 4.0 ranger with 33" tires what size gear do i need?

I think your '97 Ranger doesn't use a speedo gear like earlier models. It uses a sensor in the rear axle, requiring a computer tuneup to compensate for larger tires to correct the speedometer.

Or are you asking what differential gears you need to give you stock like performance and correct your speedometer to boot?

its a plastic splined wheel that goes into tothe bottom of my transmission where it connects to my driveshaft, it spins with the DS and calibrates my speed

Well, what gear do you have now? Figure out what gear you have now (color and/or number of teeth). Then figure out how much your speedo is off by (percentage wise) by driving a measured distance (the farther distance the better, as it will reduce your error in your calculation) and compare it to what your odometer says to figure out what percentage correction you need. Then select a speedo gear with that percentage more teeth.

Well, try the method on the link I posted. If you still need help after that let us know.

And, I still think you have an electronic speedometer which would require computer calibration. That is, unless you've swapped out the electronic parts and replaced with other non-electronic parts.
