I pulled my speedo gear out of my 4r55e to see what tooth gear I currently have, since I'll soon have to correct it when I swap in my explorer 8.8 with 4.56's(will be running with 33's).
Anyways, upon pulling it, I discovered that it had a 17 tooth gear. The weird thing is, the gear was white, which according to the tech library, should be for a manual transmission.

Are the auto and manual transmission speedometer gears interchangeable? Because I don't see any white gears in the tech section for the auto tranny. :icon_confused:

Updated the thread with a link to the article in the tech library that I was referring to.

The little shaft at the end of the gear is longer for one but not the other. At the top of the page you'll notice the maroon gear has a longer "snout" I guess I'd call it, compared to the black, red, tan and white gears.

Pretty sure you can use manual gears in an auto, but not auto gears in a manual. Of course, you could probably just clip the end off.

Your's wasn't giving you any problems was it? How many miles has it been in there?

No problems, other than it being the wrong one now, since I have larger tires and a different gear ratio.
It has been in my truck since I bought it a few years ago. It was bone stock at the time, and had stock 235's, so I don't see why there would be a need for the previous owner to swap the gear.

All 4x4 transfer cases use 'manual' gears (the auto gears are for 2WD trucks).

No prob guys. That little snippet of info probably should get added to the page on speedo gears.

You don't happen to know how to find the what my drive tooth count is, do you? Because I found the correct gear, and it says that it is for a 6 tooth drive gear.

Oops..... Um. Well. It's a good thing I don't need the last one I bought :dunno: lol.

That's good enough. Should be in the tech library page!

I know there's a red (pink?) colored drive gear, and a white one, with (just guessing by experience) about a 10-15% speed difference between them, though I can't recall if the red one was the faster one (more teeth) or if the white one was faster (if it means anything, my '90's 1350 had the 'slower' gear in it, whereas the 1354 from my '94 had the 'faster' gear).

I also don't recall any specifics about certain speedo gears being for certain drive gears, I've used the same gear on both mine and never had an issue. :dunno:

Sorry I don't have anything further.

So where exactly is this drive gear located? Because when I pulled the cable to see what speedometer gear I had, I only saw the white 17 tooth gear.
Sorry, I haven't fiddled around with the drivetrain all that much yet. :icon_confused:

Ahh, thanks for the link 85 Ranger, I didn't even see your post until right now. Cheers!
