It may be the cops are busier with more important things when bad weather is afoot, would you rather they be running speed traps or helping with wrecks, checking for downed powerlines/trees blocking the road, and all around helping those that need it?
I think you may have misunderstood my point, I would much rather the cops are helping with wrecks......helping those who need it ALL the time, not bother doing speed traps where they do no good.
From what I gather, they do more than just check speed. People without insurance and idiots driving under the influance also get caught during traffic stops which I strongly support. Around here they more or less bluff anyway, a black and white Crown Vic or Charger at 5pm sitting in plain sight on the side of the road does more to make people check their speed on the way home than a sign. One town I drove through when I was going to college had an old Caravan all decked out with cop stuff and tinted windows they would just move around town in stratigic areas and let sit... it took a couple times with the sun coming through the windows just right to realize there was no one in it.
We have what we call "creeper lanes" on some hills where it works out, it is an extra lane on a two lane so you can get over and let whatever knothead wants to pass, pass. You have to pay attention, if you are nice for one guy the dink behind him will also usually try to worm in and force you off on the gravel. It is amazing how much gravel a vehicle can throw around... usually they stand on the brake to let you back in if they are not too far past.
I use those lanes, mostly for passing the knotheads in the passing lane
I have had enough run-ins with wildlife and farm equipment that I do not wish for another 10-20mph to shed in an emergancy. Most of the people that pass me with more than a couple mph difference are sporting out of state plates, if the stupid people can't read let them pay. I have no problem with cops taxing stupid people. Out of staters won't be voting on the speed limit anyway.
Again I think you misunderstood me. I was advocating making the speed limit up to where the majority of people travel at. If that is 15 or 20 klicks higher than the posted limit, so be it.
I do think it would be nice to bring stop lights into the 21st century. I get sick of sitting at red lights and nobody ever going through the other way. To add to the frustration it is very rare to make it down the main drag here in town without catching a solid string of red lights.
I agree with you on this but good luck man seriously, trying to make changes like that won't be at all easy, and I'm too tired and busy to fight that battle.
I hope that you haven't given up totally, it will take ALL of the people to make a change to the system.
Hmmm. The seatbelt law. It got passed here in Florida. But you only get caught when you are spotted by a cop for not wearing a seatbelt. Speeding is and will always be an issue. Cops are not around all the time in all the places you see speeders. I see people pass other cars in a 25 mph zone in our community. Where are the cops? I see people speed through parking lots at 45 mph. Where are the cops? If no cop is around to catch a speeder then the speeder will never be caught. I don't think a driving or training class will help...who is going to pay for it? How much will this cost?
I know that a training class won't help everyone but I DO think it would help a lot of people that don't think about what they are doing and the consequences of their actions. Payment should be made by US [you and me in the form of local and provincial and federal governments] and the insurance companies. Meaning the people that would benefit should pay.Speeders will always speed even if they have been to a training class. I see cops every day pass me on their way to work. Who is going to pull over the cops who speed? HP's speed as well. I jhave seen them several times a month pass me in a hurry to go nowhere fast.
Social media is a great tool that we should make use of. Let's get video of these cops doing wrong and forward the vids to the commanders as well as the public media....it MAY make a difference. I can always hope.
It's not speeding. They are showing authority-
We, the people.... give them this authority, and we can make sure they don't abuse it. See previous answer.
My turn......
in my area, driving in the passing lane is now against the law (it keeps the "squatters" from causing moving traffic jams on our interstates)
HOWEVER...now the speeders can run at 90mph instead of 80mph cause they don't have to dodge the Squatters any more....
Great.... I don't see a problem with having different limits in adjacent lanes. In fact, it should be law that you can't go slower than 10 klicks higher than the right lane.
In cities, roads have been widened from 2-lane roads to 6-lane expressways to help city traffic flow better...
HOWEVER...in the city, the same Squatters still manage to get side-by-side on a six-lane exprrssway and slow the 65mph traffic down to 45mph....
IMAGINE THAT!
RANT-TIME....AS A MATTER OF FACT, I THINK THERE'S ENUFF SORRY SQUATTERS IN LOO-Z-ANNA THAT THE ROADS COULD BE WIDENED TO 16 LANES EACH WAY---AND THE SQUATTERS WOULD STILL MANAGE TO GET SIDE-BY-SIDE!
there...i feel better now...
The squatters are the ones the cops should target. I did hear of a cop ticketing someone traveling at 60 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Vancouver island. Apparently there was no passing lane for something like 60 miles. The cop finally got fed up and gave the person an obstructing traffic ticket. About bloody time!
Move over laws are just plain stupid to being with. I mean what right does anybody have telling me what lane I can drive in and what speed I can do in the lane I am in. You'd think that people had someplace to go and no time to get there the way they try to drive up my butt. Their all a bunch of morons who don't know how to drive and don't deserve to share the road with me anyway. If they want to pass me they can just do it on the shoulder or wait. Stupid dick head speeders anyway, what right do they have when I am already doing the speedlimit, I am not moving just to let them go faster. Bite me!
If everyone had your attitude, there would be a lot more guns and baseball bats being used. If you would have the courtesy to let people pass, there would be much better karma in your life. The world is really becoming much smaller and it just makes sense to be polite and courteous.
^^^+2 on that, Bro. I hate it as well. If I am doing 70 (the speed limit) and I am driving on the freeway if somebody comes up on me that means they are going faster then I am. They are the ones breaking the law. So what? Are you my brothers [or mine] keeper. let them [or me] be on my way and everyone can get on with life. I wonder how many of you [not specifically straycat] have had to work where you get paid by what you do, not by the hour? It seems to me that its the smug, silver spooned, got every thing type that don't have the courtesy to allow others to try to make a buck. If I could drive at 110 instead of 100 i could make 10% more. That's significant.Another thing I really hate is when I see signs that say 'Trucks right lanes only' and there are truckers that are passing and moving over into the left lanes and cutting off drivers and causing other drivers to have to move or slow down in a dangerous way. I really hate that!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhh.......
So true!
I think most states have laws regarding keeping right except to pass, I never see it enforced and see cops guilty of left lane camping.
Sheep don't belong in the left lane.agreed
And I WILL pass you on the shoulder if you fawk with me long enough and there's room to do so.And agreed.
How else are they supposed to catch you?
I agree, WAAAAY too much of this going on in Utah. Two of them pricks get side by side on our two lane highway nearly every day on my way to work. The highway has a couple of stoplights, and they like stopping side by side at the light, hogging the whole road.
In their defense I have had people match my speed halfway through the pass which kind of puts the passer in an awkward position. Up the speed and get around the guy or slow down, admit defeat and run the risk of them pummeling you with rocks...
Of course during the rut I have been known to reduce speed and let them run blocker.
If I am passing a string of cars and somebody flies up behind me they will wait until I get an opening to get over. If they don't like it they can go pound sand for all I care, I am not going to force an opening to let them by. I am not taking time out of my day because somebody couldn't plan ahead and thus has to run 20 over because they might miss their hair appointment. That said I don't run side by side with another vehicle down the road, it makes me nervous.
I agree that you should do a speed that is appropriate for your skill level when passing.
i admit, i speed. 5-10 mph over the speed limit except on 25/35's
but everyone around here does the same..so whatever. what i hate is people that do under the speed limit by 10 mph...
I also consistently travel at 10% over the speed limit, and sometimes I'm still being passed by a lot of people.
i mess with people on the highway tho, if i'm only doing 75 on the highway in the fast lane and someone rides my ass i'm going to keep the same speed as a car that's within a car length of me in the same lane ( so neither of us are in our blind spots) just to piss the guy off behind me. it's funny how many raging drivers there are in michigan.![]()
Better be careful, someone may take the time to follow you home.... As I have done. I'm lucky they had kids in the car.
I've learned to be more politic when dealing with assholes. I've also learned that the world is a small place, and I'm now in a position to make my point in other ways. Please keep that in mind when you choose to piss people off.

annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd....i drive the speed limit.....it's my patriotic duy as an American Citizen.....
you must think your a Congressman or something if you don't obey the laws...
what ****ing good are laws if we don't obey them.....
I obey good laws. I think its my duty to point out the unrealistic laws and try to change them.
here's another one...."if we don't obey the speed limit, the Terrorist win"
"Its a J-O-K-E, people...it's a ****ing JOKE! (Gilbert Gottfried: 1993)
Kind of funny if you are in such a toot to get somewhere you have time to run somebody down and get your butt kicked.
I watched this ass deliberately block traffic and I had time to express my views. I was lucky his kids were with him as I probably would have been charged with assault. At that time I didn't have as worldly a view as I have now.
There is a frame of mind that everyone has - Everyone that drives faster than you is a crazy person, and everyone that drives slower than you is a moron.
The state that built the road has every right to tell you not to camp in the left lane. It's not safe, you block traffic, and you're not being cute by playing ignorant. Just because you're "at the limits of the law" doesn't mean you're the most important and get to decide how everyone else has to drive. Yes, I understand if you are passing someone you are going to be in the left lane, that's what it is for. Once you finish your pass, get out of the left lane!! It doesn't matter at all if someone comes flying up behind you while you are passing - ignore them and continue to do what you were doing. They'll jump right back into the throttle and go once you finish your pass.
Agreed.
Several years ago The Pennsylvania State police has a (sadly) temporary iniative
to enforce "Failure to keep right" on the interstates.
The main reason for this was slow moving trucks that stupidly tried to pass each other on the many (MANY!) Hills in pennsylvania were creating massive traffic "Tails" which "bunched up" traffic.
All the effort to hunt down speeders is stupid when there are other things more important, but so much effort has been spent for so long to chace down "Dangerous speeders" that police cannot admit that they've been WRONG for generations.
Frankly, I think people using handheld phones and texting while driveing are as dangerous if not more so than drunk drivers and I think the penalty should be simple and direct...
when someone causes an accident due to cell phone use I think they should be tied spread eagle on their own car hood and left in the sun while traffic is stopped to allow a sufficient number of randomly chosen witnesses to arrive then a law enforcement officer (if there are no volunteers available in the witnesses) should then shove the offenders phone up his/her ass.
a Proctologist will NOT be provided by the state to extract it.
Speed violations are enforced because it EASY to enforce.
Frankly the one "slow poke" that obstructs the flow of traffic is in general FAR more dangerous, because they force others to manuever around them.
IF I were allowed to shoot every fifth person that has while driving below the speed limit in clear conditions pulled into the fast lane cutting me off so they could make/take a call on their wireless phone without worrying about right lane merging traffic the bodies would still be piled very high...
Do remember that the interstate highway system was generally DESIGNED for 1950's vintage cars to travel safely at 75mph plus.
Modern cars are FAR safer in a collision have, vastly improved (And reliable) braking and the average econobox can
outmanuever even most 50's vintage Road Race cars.
I agree with all of the above. especially the point that our vehicles are far past friction shocks and mechanical brakes. It's far past the time to have the speed limits reflect the capabilities of our vehicles and drivers.

Another thing that might be considered is traffic density. back in the sixties and seventies you could drive on an interstate, motorway or autoroute (depending on country) for sometimes an hour or more without seeing another vehicle.I think the improvements in vehicle safety far outweigh traffic densities. They used to time you with a stopwatch and if you outran the airplane they used to get really pissed, don't ask how I know. Around here they will check if your doors are locked when you park on the street, if not they write you a hefty ticket, put it on the drivers seat and lock the doors for you, now that's real police work.
Yea. One of my buddy's had some freak follow him home one night about three years ago. My buddy was getting off duty from his HP shift and drove his own car to and from work that week. He saw a guy cutting in and out of traffic and tailgating people and then started to tailgate my buddy. My buddy called it in on his cell phone. My buddy slowed down a bit and the tailgater then cut around in front of my buddy and then braked hard and then got beside him and tried to ram him!!! My buddy turned off at a different street close to his street and the idiot was still watching him and was still following. He got back on the cell and said where he was and was notified a unit was around the corner from him. My buddy stopped in the driveway of another house about 6 houses from his and drew his Glock and got out of his car. The idiot came up to him holding an aluminium base ball bat. Guess who one that fight?? Guess who went to jail??
Yes, those who write the tickets also have the power to write the story. The story is probably true but I've seen cops versions of events that would make a science fiction writer jealous.
Thanks to everyone that has taken the time to make a reply. Even if I haven't agreed with you, I have given you rep. Well....all the way up to AllenD, because apparently I need to wait 24 hours to give out more.
