i also have an 88 ford ranger xlt...

i have stock speakers (4 of them; 2 in the dash, 2 behind my seats)
and also an after market deck.

don't know what to tell you, as i don't even know what your problem really is.. if you want speakers in the back add them. i assume you don't have an extended cab right?

look at the other 88 thread for help. Me and 4x4fun have it almost nailed

put 4 1/2s in the dash and 6x9s in the doors and thats all the sound youll ever need imho

for good clean blending of sound you need mids and highs all around. not bass on one side and highs on another and sit in the middle

and he might have had factory speaker box things removed befor he got the truck

My 87 reg cab came from the factory with only two speakers in the dash. The rear speakers in those trucks were just boxes bolted to the floor behind the seatsanway.

I took the rear corner trim (with no speaker mounting holes) out off an 89 and put them in my 94 and they fit perfectly. Did it so I could have an extra foot of width for my sub box. So in theory you could get the trim peices out of a 93 or 94 that have rearspeakers and have a place to mount rearspeakers in your truck.

um with 4 speakers it will not do this. its the same as any 4 door car. i dont exactly know what your talking about. the 4 1/2s give you the highs, while the 6x9s give you the lows and mids. you mount the 4 1/2s in the dash in stock location, and 6x9s under where the window crank is, as close to the front as possible. if you go to far back, the sound hits the seat and sounds awfull. putting speakers behind the seat on a standard cab only muffles the sound, so its useless imo. i install stereos professionally so ive had some experience with speaker location. i will take some pics later.

the 4.5's and the 6x9's will be less then three feet away from each other.
the high and mids will be hitting him in the face and all the bass coming from the rear. it wont sound balanced. in some applications that's best case. but i wouldnt do it if he didnt have too. and if you put the 6x9 in the piller behind the seat your so close to it the muffel effect wont matter. not that i think the seat is that close any way. and im working on year #9 of doing this not that it matters but since you bring it up

what year are we talking about?in my 84 theres no room in the piller for speakers. and the sound waves dont hit each other because sound waves are going up from the dash, and towards the sides from the doors. so it doesnt sound horrible. but its just my opinion

and i wasnt questioning that you havent done speakers before, i was just offering my 0.02
