Got a '98 2.5 Ranger. Just turned over 80k miles, figure it's time for a tune up. I have read all the threads, faqs, and what have yous on changing the plug on my '98 2.5 and at this point I'm pretty sure the only way to get to the two under the intake is black magic.

I have 6 of the 8 done. Runs just fine with 6 new plugs. I'm about to call it quits. After getting part way through disassembling half the engine, I put it back together and did quit.

So here's the deal. I implore anyone to please either post up very specific details, including pictures or even video of your wicked black magic ways of changing these last to plugs without removing half the engine. OR, if there is anyone near Spokane, WA who can either show me how or just do their witchcraft in person, I'd be more than happy to compensate you with a case of your favorite fermented beverage (or a few bucks, or whatever I can come up with on my limited budget).

I've got 2 lonely plugs and wires that need to find their way home. Help me wicked witch of the west and click those ruby shoes.

I just changed mine.'97 2.3, I didn't remove the intake or anything for that matter.I think it comes down to the tool that you use and experience,a few curse words help.I used a 24" extension with a swivel plug socket. It's tricky but it can be done.If you were in MI. I would help you out.

i used a long extension-swivel-shortextension-plugsocket to get at mine, can do all 8 in about 30-45 mins now without dissassembling anything except the ac just to move it over a couple inches.

Jointed Extension with a barrage of different extension sizes Took me 10mins to do 6 and half an hour to do the other 2 the first time.

That dude in the burger king commercials with the small hands could get back there for you easier than normal people

plugs

hi i live about 30 or 40 miles south of spokane and i drive a 96 ranger it took me about 30 minutes to change all 8 plugs but i went the simple route and removed the upper intake the only tricky part is the egr valve and i just sprayed somepb blaster on it while it was hot from driving and it just slipped apart then i put a new egr gasket and upper chamber gasket easy pleasy no prob:icon_pepsi:

If you can't do it, no biggie... it just means you aren't smarter than the truck.

i take the head off to change the plugs. makes things a whole lot easier.

2.5 are a tough ones to do just take your time get the gaskets and pull the intake off, the plugs come out easy I use a swivel and an extension, I have done them with out pulling the intake but it was sucky and took as long, and every tool in my box to get them out, replace the wires while your at it, just take you time, back away and have a beer when your getting pissed, then go back at it make sure you put the best plug you can, back in

I use a swivel, and some extensions, take the left front wheel off then go in-between the plastic inner fender well, and the frame. That's the easiest, fastest way I've found so far.
