I am in the process of changing out the the shocks in my 2000 Ranger and got stalled on the git go. I need to remove the spare tire but i cannot get the key to work in the cable lock hole. Do I need to cut the cable that holds up the tire? Or can i twist out the lock part with a big ol screwdriver? I sprayed the thing down with PB blaster (Minnesota means rust) it does not move it even seams like the wrong key.
thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks

Who do you need to remove it to put on shocks?

I can't reach the driver side shock mount. Ok I was able to squeeze in there and replace the shock but i would still like to know how that lock can be taken out

If you don't have the key, or the key is not correct...you may have to drill it out...I"m in the same boat...

If you got to the dealer, they will be able to use a master key set and open it for you, then you can get the correct key code, and order one that works...

The assumption here is that you have a good lock, but your key is bad...

I have a good lock, and no key...so it's either "drill baby drill", or see the dealer.

The company that sell the keys is McGaurd and they have a web site...

These are the options that I uncovered for myself today...

Cut off wheel on 4" angle grinder = 10 second of work.

Not sure if rangers are the same, but on my f150, the lock froze up and the lock cylinder was simply held in place by a clip on the backside of the bumper. I crawled under and simply yanked off the clip and the lock assembly fell right out, and I never put it back. Poor design in my opinion, to be so vulnerable to rusting solid. I wonder how many people have discovered this issue on the side of the road, with a flat???!!! :annoyed:

I drilled mine out yesterday...

10 minutes

Just be careful and slowly ream out the guts of the lock and it come right out.

The black cover will stay there and it will look stock...just with a hole.

I was going down the road of replacing my key, having the dealer use there master lock set, ordering the key...then...realized I would only loose the key again !

This was a no-brainer for me...

Darn, Dude. My key stays in the truck. I have never lost any of the spare tire keys. Why not leave it in the truck? It will always be there.
