So, about a month ago help a buddy install a stereo in his Explorer. Pretty basic.

Four Sony 5x7 4-way speakers
4 channel Alpine amp
2 line out converter
Factory head unit

We got everything wired up and it worked perfectly for about a month. Now, the sound is cutting out if the volume is turned up. It cuts out completely to all for speakers at the same time. Took my factory head unit out of my Ranger and tested it in his Explorer and same thing. Any ideas? Hoping for a simple fix before having to tear everything apart again. I have a couple ideas but want to see what you think.

.

It can be a few things. But my money would be over driving the amp and clipping on all 4 channels and sending if into protection mode

This is my suspicion as well

Agreed with the 2 previous posts. Also poor air circulation around the amp will cause this (overheating). A bad ground can as well.

Completely agree with above. It's clipping... I'd google how to properly tune an amp (some great guides out there) and go through the whole process.

While poor air circulation is possible, I've run a 750 watt amp under my seat for my two jl w3's and never had a problem. It's an old amp with not much room to breathe and I think if it can survive where it's at there's not much that can get tighter in the truck.

I think it was a bad ground. Have it grounded to a front seat bolt. Took the seat out to try a different amp. Grounded it one last time with the seat out just for grins and it worked perfect. Put the seat back in and still working fine.

Thnx for all the suggestions
