Sonuva beeeeep!

Would it be going out this soon though?

That's the thing the. 2 out of 4 were lifetime the other were the ones that had the lifetime warranty.

Shim the starter? Never heard of that. And yeah 80 bucks a starter is gettin kinda old.

It's common and often needed especially with used or remand Starters

....why would you buy 2 lifetime warrantied starters but not take advantage of the warranty...? :icon_confused:

My thoughts exactly buy one and keep swapping it out, not like the employees care, and clearly there is the distinct possibility that they keep giving you crappy replacements. Anyways I'd get my money back bro.

i had the same problem. the alignment stud on the new one was too small, allowing the starter to move away from the flywheel. every couple weeks i had to loosen starter, push it tight toward the flywheel, and tighten it. would work for awhile, then act up again. finally took it back to napa, and got a new one. working fine now. napa no longer carries that brand starter. hope this helps

This. I know someone who has replaced about 20 starters, 2 flywheels, and a bellhousing because of this. He has the mazda transmission and the starter would move so much that it stripped out one of the bolts. He got a starter (NOT REMAN) from autozone that was supposed to be for the mazda trans only. The bolts fit better and now it works perfect.
Oh and by the way check your engine and trans mounts. His were messed up as well. Hope that helps.

Because I bought one with a lifetime it went out they said I can replace it this time but the warrantee expired after that. Which I think is bullsh*t and then I bought another and used the warrantee from that. Apparently some "lifetime" warranties aren't so lifetime.

yeah, find one with a gaurantee, warranties usually cover ONE free replacement. change the solenoid if you have not yet, its cheap insurance, only buy a nmae brand one though.

Weird I've never had problems like that with any of the commercial parts stores. I've exchanged their crappy parts multiple times ABCs the worst I've gotten is a dirty look from the manager

Ok, this seems like kind of an old thread, but I'm having the same issues, except I've shimmed the starter, taken out the shims, changed shims, etc. Still having grinding issues after about a day or 2 it starts grinding again. I've got the Toyo Koygo (Code 5) so is there something I'm not seeing, or what's going on here, this is the 3rd starter, guess this is why there was an extra starter in the back when I bought this thing. The flywheel looks great, but this grinding and failing to start is getting very old, I don't feel comfortable driving it out of town or anything now.

FYI, make sure you have the right bolts in the starter, if they aren't they may allow the starter to move enough after a few starts to cause it to start grinding and pretty soon not close enough to turn over the motor. Just found this out on my bronco 2 after installing a different stater, and shimming it, it worked great for about 5 starts then the starter moved out of position again.
