Think you answered your own question there.

Companies that overload their vehicles disable the OD so drivers don't leave it on and toast the transmission.

My guess, the company mechanic was tired of fixing trans, because hauling lots of weight in the back and maybe trailer is a no-no in overdrive. Most people don't read the manual that tells them this.

Edit, adsm08 beat me to it.

It was never driven over 40 mph?? Who knows and who cares?? lol
Just fix it and see if it works.

You don't need overdrive to go over 40. I regularly use 3rd up to 45. OD doesn't even kick in on his truck until 45 at least.

Makes sense, I guess. Deters abuse by ignorance. I have a buddy with a 91 f-150 who had been driving around with his truck in overdrive for years. I dunno how we got on the subject but I had to explain to him that he shouldn't use that until he is going at least 55 and not trying to accelerate.

There's nothing at all wrong with driving around in overdrive (on an automatic) under normal circumstances, i.e. no trailer, etc... From the description you gave, it sounds like your friend is doing just fine. He doesn't need to wait until 55mph to switch in.

Overdrive used to be this magical thing that bolted on in place of the tailshaft and you pulled a cable to activate it. Now any modern vehicle has 2 or 3 gears less that 1.00 and those are technically overdrive, but just gears really.

The auto does what it needs to do. It downshifts when it needs to downshift--that's why it's called an automatic. Don't muck with it. The only time you need to think about it is if in mountainous terrain it hunts in and out of whatever your top gear is. That makes heat as the clutches cycle. Pull it down a gear, or click it into tow/haul if you have that option.

So in my 1993 automatic 4.0 Ranger I should have just had it in O/D the entire time i drove it unless I was hauling a trailer?. It seems like read the manual cant honestly remember (I favor manual transmissions), and it only suggested O/D at speeds of 55 and above.

over drive doesn't become active till 45 mph. so turning it on at 45 mph is doing the same thing the transmission always does. Over drive is a gear. your transmission never starts out in 5th gear. connect the wire, and leave her alone.

not sure where the idea were driving around in overdrive all the time came from. someone used to driving a CVT most likely.

My visor sticker clearly states to not use OD below 45 mph with a manual transmission as well.

I don't think I have overdrive in the dime.. if I do it's automatic.

The ranger, I can't remember. I don't think that did either.

:D

It's because you have the 2.9 and they're afraid you'll twist off the input shaft.
