Ok, have my truck all back together except for one little problem. Can't figure out the order/arrangement of my solenoid wires.

I know that pretty much everything has to go on the same post as the battery or it only runs in start. Problem is that I have the 4.0 starter and clutch on my 2.9 and home made wiring for it. Can't figure out which side needs to go away from the battery.

Do I put the heavy cable away from the battery, or the trigger wire? Need to get this stupid truck back on the road, and these gremlins are the only thing holding that up right now.

That's an 87 2.9 right ? While staring across at it from the passenger side.... (If memory serves worth a damn that is )
The battery pos. wire connects on the battery side ( thick post on top ) of the solenoid, closest to the fire wall ( lower thick post on the solenoid ) is the thick power wire that goes straight to the starter, the TOP small post is the ignition post and the BOTTOM small post is the starter wire.
Its marked on the solenoid 99% of the time. Its to dark to look under my hood right now but here's an image for reference if it helps you any.
You can make out the "I" on the top post and the "S" on the lower though.

The 4 liter starter has the solenoid attached to the starter. The battery cable goes directly to the solenoid on the starter and the fender mounted solenoid is just used as a relay.

All rangers have the solenoid on the starter and relay on the fender well.
The 2.9L relay on the fender well is not the same as the one on the 2.9. ( at least they don't share the same part number any way )
I think you need to change it out for the 4.0 relay off a 91.
