So sad. what were they thinking?

Who? Who are you talking about when you say 'they' ? The starting price for a Ranger for 2012 is over 22k..not a 4x4. Look at the advertisements in your area.
The best selling compact truck in America...the Toyota. It has been for many years. It out sold Rangers, Bro. There is no $15,000 truck to be found in America and there never will be.....That price is for small gas sipper cars. I have buddies who bought new Tacoma 4x4 4 doors for around 23-24k....fully loaded. They went with Toyota due to the fact they like to wheel with a family and their pets with plenty of room. They got rid of their Rangers just because the truck did not have enough room. So, Ford lost more sales there. I still wish Ford would have given America that full 4 door Ranger. The Sport Trac is not a body style I like or a truck I will ever own.

Here is an example of a 4 banger 2wd in the Tampa Bay area....22.5k

i was at the toyota dealer the other day with one of my friends, he was looking at tacomas. you cant get one with options under 30k, fully loaded your looking at 35k. you could buy a 4 door tundra with the 5.7 for 3 grand more. either way ill pass, i dont like anything about toyotas beside the fact that they haul ass, and that is completely useless to me. if i want to go fast ill buy a v8 car. ford should have redesigned the ranger, slapped the 3.7 with the six speed and a turbo 4 banger or 4 banger diesel in it. updated the styling a little bit (even though to this day the ranger still looks much better than the tacomas), and sold the crap out of them. but no it cant compete with their precious f150 sales (even though an f150 is my dream truck) oh well we can hope

Sorry, mid 20's would get you a decked out Ranger back in their heyday.

Here is a 2wd 4.0 XLT for $22k, an XL four banger std cab shortbox would be cheaper yet.

Toyota didn't overtake the Ranger until Ford forgot about it in 2004, before that Ford was #1 since the late 80's.

Hmmmm. I don't know about that. I just remember hearing how Toyota trucks outsold all trucks in America for years. Edmunds, Car & Driver, Truck magazines ans Road and Track and Automobile talked about it back in the mid 80's. I saw how many Toyota trucks were all over the wheeling areas I was at back in the 80's and even the 90's...not much wheeling Rangers were around to be seen when I was stationed in California and going to some of the major events of the decades.....Moab for instance. Not too many Rangers seen. I had a beautiful 83 Ranger that I bought in 84 with less then 10,000 miles on it. I lifted it and added 33's to it and took it to Moab a few times. I had a few 22r Toyota's trucks lifted as well and the 4 banger Toyota out performed my V6 modified 2.8 motor. A lot of people were surprised I brought a Ranger to Moab a few times. They never saw one there. Darn!!! Why not? It is a lifted 4x4. But, there were so many Toyota trucks every where then. I keep that Ranger for over 12 years. I never had an issue with it. I never had any issues with my Toyota's either. I drove them across country from California to Florida. All the people on the highways were staring at my lifted trucks. I guess I was ahead of the times with a dd lifted truck with 33's or 35's crossing the country as much as I did. But...I would still take the Toyota over the Ranger any day. My Toyota's just loved to perform better than any of my Fords. That 22r was a hell of a good 4 banger!!!

From 1987 to 2004, the Ranger was the best-selling compact pickup in America

I think that used to be in the front of the LMC catalogs too.

Up until a couple years ago first generations used to be as thick as flies around here, the herd has been thinning recently though... darn things are pushing 30 years old by now. Dunno when the last time was I saw an old 'yota, their anti rust theory sucked. Usually they are gone from the top of the wheel wells down and crusty everywhere else. I don't know as I have even seen one in JY lately...

With 110hp it isn't too surprising a four cylinder could keep up with a 2.8. My grandfather's '89 GM 2.8 would have torn my 2.8 apart too but in '85 Ford was bragging about having best in class power with the 2.8 (which makes me feel sorry for whoever was worst in class) Of note the 2.9 was well into production when they stole the crown from Toyota or GM (dunno who was #1 before them)

I can stick my gopro in my window and drive around for its four hours of battery life and even counting duplicates I doubt you will see 10 Toyota trucks of any vintage here.

Dodge Rampage! Yeah baby!

Contradict much?

How did I contradict myself, I'm speaking in the terms of over all power the 3.7 is a great motor with alot of torque that would get great gas mileage in the ranger. And a small turbo 4 cylinder once again proven that they can creat boat loads of low end torque while still getting great gas mileage. Being fast is only a small factor in that equation

The Ranger is gone!!! Long live the Ranger!!!!!! Well, I will never buy another new Ford car or truck. I will buy a good used Ford truck if I ever need one. My buddies who have bought the new Tacoma 4 door 4x4 have never paid more then 25k for them. I know of 6 friends who got rid of their Rangers in the past 2 years and bought a new Tacoma. They never looked back. They all love the Tacoma with the room to take the family camping and wheeling and have a great time. I just won't justify myself to spend big money on a new vehicle. I love not having payments on anything!!!

All the 4 door 4x4 Tacoma's by me are over 30k, your friends must haggle well or something.

I'll stick with my Ranger, thanks. Toyota trucks have nothing to offer me. My Ranger does everything I need her to do. Plus, no payment!

My Ranger is a toy, if something happened to it I probably wouldn't replace it with another Ranger. It was my first vehicle and you can only have one of those, no other truck can take its place.

However I do like my F-150, if something happened to it I would eagerly get another. A Taco would suit me no better than a Ranger... not to mention the new ones look hidious.

I am curious about the cheap Tacomas too...

The cheapest four door Taco the "local" (60mi away, another reason I don't like them) Toyota dealership has, $29,230 and it is two wheel drive.

For about three grand more you can get it in 4wd...

Yea, bring back the el camino!:icon_thumby:

Now theres an Idea for GM to make a profit to pay back taxpayers 40billion.

there's a ranchero down the road that the owner is restoring...dat's a heavy vehicle.....
