so is this impossible?

wicked... the tach was only at like 4500-5000 RPm, deff not a rev limiter unless it limits the revs at a different number in 5th than the rest of the gears (in which case would be a speed limiter). It acted like the fuel got cut off ie. running out of gas just before having to push your truck, you know. and quit doing it as soon as i let off the gas. So call it what you want to call it, "it" exsisted on my 92.

well i am accelerating and at 100 or so mph it will just shut off until it gets back to 95 or so mph and then start accelerating again and do it again when it hits 100 mph again. i am FOR SURE it is a govenor. my brother put racing computer in his 96 and it doesnt do it any more. but i dont wanna buy racing comp yet. but looks as if i am going to have to.

if it is a governer, its probably governed at 92 MPH like all of fords OBDII trucks are (your speedometer only goes to 85, right?).

theres a reason ford does this: your driving a truck, not a sports car. bad things can happen to drivetrane and suspension components at speeds over 100MPH...anyone who has experienced suspension resonation, even at low speed, knows what i mean. thats not to mention the limited life of wheelbearings and the like due to heat buildup. imagine a front tire flying off at 100MPH.

its easy to overcome the governer on an OBDII vehicle with a chip or programmer...us EEC-IV guys dont have it quite that easy.

the rev limiter IS a fuel cutoff.

what exactly did the truck do to make you believe you hit a speed limiter? just quit accelerating?

i know what he's talking about, in my 94 it's like hitting the brakes, it slowed down when i was going down a hill

I've wondered about this too. I've had my 90 turbo ranger's speedometer about back to zero, but on the underside of the peg. It didn't hit any speed limiter. I'm running a turbocoupe computer, which I imagine has a much higher speed limiter than the ranger computer. Or maybe they didn't have them at all in 88 (the year the computer is from)

Anyways, I wouldn't imagine that it would take more than unplugging the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) to defeat it. The VSS is the same part that drives the speedometer cable. It is mounted in the side of the tranny and has the speedometer cable and a electrical connector attached to it. I think unplugging that connection should get rid of the speed limiter. However, i'm not sure what else the computer uses the VSS signal for, so you may not be able to run without it.

i was hoping noone would bring that up....

unplugging the VSS will defeat the speed limiter, and the truck will run and drive without it. the computer uses VSS input to control idle and prevent stalling at speed, so you may get some funny idling characteristics with it unplugged.

and of coarse factory cruise wont work without it...

i would still advise against doing so, but its your life. just dont do it on public roadways.

well my ranger has upgraded suspension and tires. including wheel bearings. so im not worried about it. but when i at the track and being limited too 92 or so mph. thats keeping me out of the MPH club at dragway 42. so i guess new comp for the win.

I'll agree with Wicked on this, I did it to my old '02 Edge, the truck was almost undriveable, it wouldn't shift at the right time, or it would jump between gears. I didn't even make it to the end of my neighborhood before I realized it was a bad idea. That and with the VSS unplugged you don't know how fast your going anyways.

im not doubting you on the speed governer because my 95 v6 topped out at 110 and the motor was only like midway through the gear.

damn, thats a fast 2.3 ranger to get up to 92mph in a quarter!
