I have been wanting to get a sporty car to mess around with for quite awhile, I have flip-flopped this way and that way on what to get but I think I have have settled on a early hardtop SN-95 (94-95) with the 302 engine and probably a 5 speed manual tranny. I would prefer to get a '95 to have the last year of the orignal 5.0 to go with my brother's first year of the new 5.0, but am open to a '94 too. Something still pretty simple to work on but late enough to be a nice cruiser (A-C, cruise, OD...). Something to take around to shows and on cruises, drive long distance with... not really for a race car. I like my truck and all, but driving my brother's Mustang this past weekend has reawakened me to how nice a car is to drive for a long distance.

Does anyone know of any good places to read up on them?

Any problem areas to check out?

It will be awhile, I want to get my V-8 swap completed with my Ranger first, but I would like to research them before I jump in and buy a problem car.

First off; Nice choice on a car.

www.allfordmustangs.com is to Mustangs as TRS is to Rangers. Lots of great guys over there. Another great site is www.corral.net but I tend to get better responses at AFM.

One problem I have seen on a few SN95's is Ford ran the wire that goes to the brake light switch awful close to the clutch quadrant (device the cable attaches to way up at the top of the pedal) and it can cut into that wire. If I had to give you any piece of advice, it would be to get one with a T5 and steer clear of the AODE. Performance is much better with a T5.

Also, in 95 Ford offered a "GTS" which was a downgraded version with V6 seats, some had no spoiler on the trunk either. Only some had a "GT Mustang" badge on the side. My friend bought one brand new in 95 which had all exterior markings of a GT, but the interior of a V6. Something to be aware of. Some people consider these to be collectible, I do not however. Here's a little more detailed info:

Cool, I haven't heard of many problems with them going in the dealer for common repairs... but I have always wondered how many drag their 15yo car back to the dealer anyway.

From what I have read in what little my Mustang books mention about this bodystyle, the GTS was a stripped GT. Pretty much set up for how a person that was going to race a car would want it without all the extra weight of power windows and stuff. The cheap V-6 seats were put in because most racers would rather put in their own seats rather than even have the GT seats.

Neat in concept, but it must not have sold as well as they thought they would have. I can see where they would be collectible, but I want some frills.

I do want a manual, I had fun with the last one I had until I moved to Omaha. Stop and go traffic took a lot of fun out it, and I have since moved back to my hometown.

Also check SN95 forums...Lot of helpful people there and good info!

also buying the mags and just reading, is a good way to go.

It was outsold by the 95 Cobra R
95 was also the year of the Boss 5.0(the last year) and a couple other special models.

How so? There were only 250 Cobra R's produced

This was the Larry Shinoda tribute car. This turned out to be a good idea because Larry dies shortly after; like 96 or 97. As far as I know this only had stickers on it calling it a Boss and possibly a different spoiler on the decklid.

It was a guess, honestly. Cobra R is so far outta my league I didnt bother to learn much about their sales numbers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Mustang_SVT_Cobra

When I was 18 I needed a car and I was home on my first leave from the army. I went to Crystal River Chevy and they had a pre-owned Yellow on blakc on black convertible Boss. Canary bright ass yellow. It was awesome 5 spd all the goodies. 13k I told them I wanted to test drive before I signed. But that I was already financed and ready to go. The guy came back out a couple was just finishing the paperwork on it.

Wern't the Cobra R's title only, no VIN which meant track only. Or do I have it ass backwards. I never kept track of the stangs for many years. I also would reccomend allfordmustangs. If you had a classic, best place of any.
If you have the time, take it. There are usually some good buys out there.

They were race only, they actually had a 300hp 351W which was EPA certified, but I think it was deemed race only because it had no catalytic converters. As mentioned in the link I posted, they were A/C, power window, power seat, radio and rear seat delete. I couldn't verify if they had a VIN though. Just an interesting factoid, all 250 were built one after another and all in about 7 hours (I forget the actual time). Oh, and they were all Crystal White. You also had to be licensed as a race driver to purchase one. That seems kind of retarded in hindsight, the new GT has 112 more horsepower and any schmo can buy one.

The 2000 Cobra R (which was the only Cobra made in 2000) I saw did in fact have a VIN though. I have a picture of the window sticker somewhere (on one of my old hard drives) which does have the VIN printed on it.

Sorry 85_Ranger4x4, I hope you don't feel I jacked your thread. I can talk Mustangs all day =).

Oh, and one more thing. A guy at work has an 02 GT that just had the brake wire thing happen on his. So Ford must not have caught on to the 94-95 problem. One thing in common is all of them had aftermarket aluminum quadrants, so maybe that is why?
