Smoking Exhaust

no. think about what you said. Smoke is coming from the exhaust, So why would you think its the transmission, which has no direct correlation to the exhaust. the exhaust comes from the engine, in case you didnt know.

what color is the smoke?

I have an 89 Ranger XLT w/412k...I live in the mtns, do a lot of up/down hills. The other day I saw smoke from the exhaust when I was going up the hill. Would this be the signs of a tranny reaching it's end?http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/images/smilies/dunno.gif

Yeah smoke would not come out of the exhaust if your tyranny was going. Like rose said we need to know the color of the smoke.

White = coolant
Blue = oil
Black = unburned fuel

So you know a lot of car words, but you don't really know what they mean or what the named parts do. That's what I get from that.

Time to break out the text books and start teaching a new disciple I 'spose.

We need colors.

Maybe, but I'm gonna go write an auto basics book and start selling it and make some $$.

And this feller gave me the idea.

Trannys can cause engine smoke!
Smoke could be coming from the exhaust if it was the vacuum regulator on an a4ld.
A failing vacuum regulator leaks trans fluid into the vacuum line and burns off.
It's most noticeable when first started, but a bad leaking regulator would have a constant hue of smoke.

Epic failure... OP is legit.

he said a lot of up hill and down hill driving. a worn engine will pull oil past the rings during compression braking, then burn it off under load. maybe that is what he is seeing

It can happen, yes. But he asked if it was a sign of a trans ready to fail. It really isn't. The vac modulator goes bad all the time, that doens't condem the rest of the trans.

Also, it hasn't been specified if this is an auto or manual.

it's an automatic.....i can just feel it.....

Whe I read this about trannys smoking I got some real wired visuals. (for some reason thinking about transvestites again.....:D) What the hell is wrong with me anyways?

yeah if it were a transvestite, he would be blowing a rod.
