Is it common for lots of oil out the dipstick when the turbo goes out? Mine just went out - lots of smoke and oil out the exhaust and lots of oil in the engine compartment. It is hard to see just where the oil came from but it still was making pressure when I shut it down so I'm pretty sure there is no other damage. If anyone has a T-3 for cheap I am interested. I need to get this truck back on the road.

If you do have the stock PCV valve then yeah it's normal, you should get a turbo pcv valve or just ditch it.

I'm running with the pcv unhooked-I should probably pull it and put a cover on it. thanks

Not covering it, but removing it and running a catch can thats breaths good to it. If you puut a cover to it you may end up having even more problems..

I got a few IHI's if your interested or need one...

SVT

I got a new pcv and will install the same time my turbo goes on (thanks SVT). I'm gonna block of the egr, not the pcv like I said eariler.

I took the egr valve that was bad, sawed the valve off of the flange, tapped it, and use it for an extra vacuum port/boost reference, and it looks good too.

Try a pcv valve out of gen1 supra, stock pcv valves leak pretty bad in boost.

If that doesnt work, just run a catch can and a breather. All engines get blow by in boost and it needs to be vented somehow.

Just plugging the pcv valve hole will just make your problems worse and your motor will leak out of the rear main seal, gaskets and dip stick tube.

to answer your first question, if your turbo is oiled by your engine oil (which i assume it is) then yes, that is "normal" but it's not good... the oil will be going out the exhaust, but it may also be going in the intake, and it is obviously leaking in the engine compartment, and by the sounds of what happened, it seems like it's leaking a whole lot... that could dry you up faster than spongetowels!

as for the dipstick tube, no that's not normal...

and yes, i realize you've probably figured this all out by now, but didn't see it answered

When the turbo seals went out I'm pretty sure it pressurized the crankcase and that was the easiest way out. I got another turbo and am fighting an exhaust leak on my cheap cheap header. I think I'm gonna weld up the crack on my stock manifold and reuse it-at least it seals!! Thanks for the input anyway.

Since the turbo basically uses gravity to return oil to the crankcase, anything that restricts the flow , including pressure in the crankcase will cause the turbo seals to leak.

The ranger is back and running perfect. A little adjustment (clocking) and a good gasket was all it took. Hopefully next week will get some 4.56 gears and I will be able to utilize fifth gear a little more. It is a great little truck.
