ok guys so I have been working on my truck now for alittle bit I had a burned valve on cylinder 6. well today I finished putting everything together and it was ready. when I turned the key it started up right away, sounded good, had oil pressure and everything seemed well. well when I shut it off I noticed some smoking in the engine bay looked like it was coming from back of the upper intake down near the camshaft position sensor? not 100% sure though because it didn't last long. is this normal from all the new gaskets and what not or is something wrong? also after I shut it off there was some sort of tapping noise I heard about 4 or 5 times then stopped. any help is appreciated thanks.

The tapping noise is probably just the metal cooling as for the smoke maybe you spilled something back there and its just burning off, you gotta figure if the motor is off and its making noise its probably nothing.

Sniff test! Did it smell like coolant? Oil? Electrical Wiring? Everything has a distinctive smell.

thanks for the responses guys. yeah I guess I forgot the tapping noise is just the cooling process you hear after you shut your vehicle off. it's been awhile since I heard it run ha. also this was my first project so I was just super worried about things going wrong when I started it back up. I believe I located where it was smoking. right at the egr pipe to exhaust manifold because I spayed the huge nut with pb blaster to get it off then put a little oil on to reinstall. which would explain a wd-40 type smell when it was burning.
