I was told today that if i took the smog pump off my truck itll make more horsepower five or six.. what does it even do?

It pumps air (oxygen) into your exhaust for your catalytic converter so it can get hot enough to do its thing. If your truck is stock, the cat not operating right will not gain you any more power, and you cannot feel a 5-6hp difference anyway.

:icon_thumby:The smog pump is a required Item if you are in a state or area that makes you test. You will not pass without it.

It does pump air into the catalytic converter, on most it pumps the air into the middle of the converter, as it is made up of two different style converters. The one in the front or closest to the engine is a NCSR catalyst that takes what little oxygen that is left after combustion and converts the NOx and CO to lower ppm comming out of it. The second stage of the converter is a Oxydation catalyst that requires excess oxygen to reduce CO emissions and destroy fermaldhydes. So don't take it off, keep the system working and give ol mother earth a hand by doing your part not to polute.:icon_thumby:

If the big old heavy mechanical fan doesn't eat up 10 horse, I can't see that dinky little fan in the air pump (basically a water pump with bigger blades and no water) can eat up 5 to 6.

They started putting them in in 66 I think it was.Back then it was to get hydrocarbons to burn out of the exhaust.Smog used to be a lot worse we have made a lot of headway.Smog was hydrocarbons that were left in the sunshine.Hopefully I remember that right. If you take it off you won't be able to tell.

They are actually a vane pump similar to a water pump for a outboard the vanes slide in and out displacing air. They dont use much power as long as it is pumping air and it spins free usually a check valve is not working or either the thermactor or bypass valve is not working. To test it disconnect the thermactor from both the check valves and take it off the bypass valve. with the negine running apply vacuum to the bypass valve and see if it is working it will pump air or vent out the sides as you apply vacuum depending if it it normally open or closed. As the engine is running you should not get exhaust out either of the check valves the lower one goes to the cat and the upper one to the crossover tube. If the bypass valve is working then put the thermactor back on leaving the two ports open when you apply vacuum to it the airflow should change but a little leakage is normal as long as it is obvious the thermactor is working you may need to rev it up to get enough airflow to tell. With mine the upper check valve was stuck open and fried the inside of the thermactor from the hot gasses going backwards thru it from the manifold.

I don't believe 5-6 hp by removing the smog pump or the 10 hp by removing the mechanical fan, what I do know is, the less the engine has to turn, the better the throttle response. I know in my case that it has increased the power by allowing the engine to rev somewhat quicker from the "get go"...:3gears:

I won't get into the emissions subject......I can say I still pass it every year....:secret:

You guys have taught me that removing stuff from the drive belt doesn't ADD horsepower......

it just frees up the horsepower your engine already has....converting to an electric radiator fan & converting to a manual steering box definately will be noticeable though---I had to idle my VVVVVVVVVVV-8 down 200 rpm when I made those two changes together....:yahoo:......

also noticeable when hitting 2nd gear & leaving a little screeeeeeech ....:icon_surprised:
