I recently purchased a 96 ranger with 2.3L 2WD 5spd (with the M50D transmission) At least I believe it is the M50D according to door label. The shifter was insanely sloppy when I picked it up. Couldn't find first or fifth. I made it home and replaced the entire clutch system along with ordering a bushing repair kit for the shifter (http://www.thegearbox.org/catalog/item/3856842/4379513.htm).

The problem is... when I took apart my assembly, there is only the plastic spacers with the "wavy" washers that clip onto the plastic spacers. The new kit does not come with wavy washers. Just two flat washers, two plastic spacers, two new pins and the inner boot cover.

I added the new flat washers, the new plastic spacers and reused the old wavy washers. Once I tightened the inner boot cover and installed the shifter, I noticed that it was stiff.

I can find all gears and the shifter feels nice and tight. It just seems too tight. When you pull the shifter from first to neutral, the shifter should relax to the center position. Instead it sticks to the left side (or right side if you push it that way). It just seems to tight and can't find its home in the "center" of neutral.

Should I leave out the "wavy" washers? Maybe take out the Flat washers? Maybe take one washer out at a time until the stick doesn't feel as stiff?

I tried to email the company but it's the weekend and who knows how long it will take them to get back to me (not to mention whether or not I will get correct information).

Thanks for any advice or help and just to be clear... I have read the "how to" on the bushing replacement but it doesn't seem to answer my questions.

I'd ditch the flat washers and leave the wavy ones so when the bushings wear the shifter stays tighter than if you just had the flat ones. It sounds like that should be enough to do it.

Did you get this sorted out? I need to do this and would like to do it right the first time. Any and all help appreciated.
