slipping trans

i have a 89 ranger 4x4 i feel like it slipping but when u put it in 4 low it dont slip is it the trans or transfer going bad

Sounds like the trans. Try some Lucas Trans treatment,it works wonders and is ALOT cheaper than a new trans.
 
Clinton, I aggree. It sounds like your trans is slipping. When you shift into 4 low it becomes easier for the trans to to turn the tires because of the gear reduction in the transfer case. Lucas trans fix is great stuff. I also recomend adjusting both bands as outlined in the tech section. Search "A4LD band adjustment" for detailed instructions. Let us know what you find. Good luck!
