When swaping a 4.0 clutch in place of the 2.9 is it necessary to use a 4.0 slave as well or is a 2.9 one fine?

I believe the slave cylinders are transmission specific, not engine specific.

If you have the FM145, it is a different slave than one found in a FM146 or M5OD. The slave from a FM145 slave will not fit inside a M5OD (or FM146, if I'm remembering correctly).

Hope that helps.

FWIW, I had a FM145 (previous owner put it in to replace the A4LD) behind a 4.0, and the slave from in the FM145 worked just fine on the 4.0 clutch system.
