Simple question regarding fuel economy...

that would be 55 in a 65 aswell.....and most the time there in the fast lane doing it

As to speeding...With the limit at 65 EVERYBODY passes you, when i was out west, with a 70 speed limit, every body passed me. Honestly , I think that everybody speeds anyhow, no matter what the limit.


I found I get about 2 more mpg going at 55 rather than 65... My 2.5 is generally happiest right around 3k, it has never been good much above 68-70...we have too many grades, even on the interstates...I don't bother with overdrive...I loose alot of milage there, even if the speed is high enough to keep the engine in the power band.

That is very true around here. If I do 65 almost everyone passes by, 70 (the speed limit) is about fifty-fifty.

See now, my 3.0L only got about 0.5MPG better doing 55-60 vs. 65-70 and that was close to 2000miles (Port Huron MI to Charleston SC and back).

Most days, I drive slow. My road, there's nobody on it. I'm a stickler for punctuality--I consider it disrespect to be late. So I'm always early leaving and I generally have plenty of time, and I don't like to hurry. I speed up to the speed limit if someone gets behind me. But usually there's nobody. I see the same people everyday so I know who to expect.
I hate the city. I have my routes arranged that I never have to see a traffic light.

you're the cool pokey person then . I always seem to get stuck behind the same people and they always do the same speed, and they always have 2 or more cars stuck behind them, makes you wonder if they ever look in their mirror.

Well, if you're not doing the speed limit, get the hell out of the way. Far too many times I've been stuck behind some pussy who's doing 35 on my road (limit is 50) and then further continues to hit the brakes as they approach corners that I take all the time at 55MPH in a lifted BRONCO II. I don't even see an excuse for driving super slow with a trailer, I pulled my grandfathers boat (about 26 feet and 5500-6000LBS with a trailer) with his 97 4.6l F250 auto back from the coast when I had my license under a year, I was able to take all corners at the speed limit as if I wasn't towing anything. My dad drove truck for 20 years and hated getting stuck behind RVers that couldn't figure out the speed limit.

I know a lady that got pulled over for doing 55 in a 55! She had a mile long line of traffic behind her, all pissed off. I REALLY wish the police would do this more often.
Although, If the LAW is 55 mph, You shouldn't be so wanting to break the law. I know, I know, the police don't do it but, that still doesn't make it right.
I try very hard to not be a nuisance to other drivers but, when they try to drive excessive speeds through my town, I'll slow right down to 25.

maybe some of you don't understand the concept of speed "limit". sorry we don't all have Mario Andretti's genes, but i drove long haul awhile myself, my companies rule of thumb was stay 10mph below the posted speed limit. Besides, you gonna pay my speedin' ticket? Didn't think so, but I'm sure you'd be plenty pissed if I dumped my load, and shut the road down.

I never said to speed but driving under the speed limit is bullshit to other people who want to get somewhere. I also agree with you Mutant, when I see people coming up behind me weaving in and out of lanes I'll do my best to block them. What I really hate is when I'm doing 75MPH in a 65 and I still have some jackass who wants to tail gate me and then tries the 2 other lanes to get around me and always gets blocked and he has to get back behind me.

Funny...I do the speed limit on our main road to work...esp at night, when there are 3 speedtraps on it, every night (I goto work at 11:45 PM)...I still get 1 or 2 cars tailgating me. I have a simple solution for tailgaters....2nd gear. Although there was the guy who got pissed off when I was doing 15 in a 55 in a major snowstorm...he passed me and promply did a 180 into the ditch. I stopped to help and he got all pissed off because I was going too slow. I left him in the ditch.

When I am on a 4 lane, I will go whatever damn speed I like (so long as it is over the posted minimum and under the speed limit). The left lane is right there if you want to pass me.

That's because everyone are in a hurry & for what reasons? Most of those reasons are due to themselves over sleeping or just in a hurry peroid. It reminds me of kids in grade school pushing & shoving to get to the front of the line to be FIRST regardless the reason.

Around here the "big rigs" handle that problem pretty well in that they go two & sometmes three abreast to stop these selfish people who think they are the only people in the world & everyone else should give way to them. And the majority of the offenders doing it are from out of state. They don't live here, pay taxes here & have no respect for anyone on the road. The would cut off their own Mother & Father if they had the chance to get to front of the line. Around here do what we have to do to try & prevent that from happening.

This is what I am talking about. I agree with you 100%. These idiots are the very ones who cause everyone to salm on brakes & makes everyone driving with some sense to have to slow down & causing backups. But do they care? Not one bit & that's because they think they have the right to do whatever they pleas when they get behind the wheel. I got news for them. They have no more rights then anyone else does but they don't think that way. I see more wrecks & injuries caused by doing this on my daily runs then any other thing. Why are some peoplein such a hurry to die or cause someone else to die all because they "think" they are in a hurry.

I had one driver pass me & 8 other cars 10 different times in the course of 15 miles & guess what? You guessed it. He wound up at the END OF THE LINE all because he wouldn't stay in one lane & drive with the flow of traffic. You could see him pounding the dash with his fist & giving everyone the "bird" & everyone just laughed. He does this every morning too. He is never going to learn that other people are not going to tolerate this type of "thug" behavior. He doesn't OWN the road. And around this area, the YOUNG GIRLS under 30 yrs of age are the worse offenders doing this. AND they do while trying to talk on the cell phone & put on makeup while trying to drive 75+ mph weaving from one lane to another with no turn signals. And then they want to blame everyone else for them being late for where they are going??????????
